This is a Labour Councillor for you. He uses insulting phrases which amount to antisemitism and then blames Margaret Thatcher cos he's thick.

//Bull claims he did not realise the character from The Merchant of Venice was Jewish and said he would have known if his schooling had been better.

“I grew up in a working class area in Ilford where this was a common saying, but I didn’t know it was offensive. This was a genuine accident and I reiterate my sincere apology for this mistake,” he said.

“If the education system had been better under Margaret Thatcher, I might have known.”//

Apologised and stood down , correct response from him.
"cos he's thick " ???. lol.
gulliver, did you know Shylock was a Jew?
Why are school children still being taught Shakespeare when his writings are antisemitic?

Surely it is not this thick councillors fault that he was subjected to the Merchant of Venice and its depiction of jewish people as crooked and money grabbing.

Fortunately Clacton has a 15,000 Conservative majority, so the likelihood of him being elected was extremely slim.

//“If the education system had been better under Margaret Thatcher, I might have known.”//

was his ignorance of Shakespeare directly attributable to a lack of free school milk?
Weird, innit? Smoggy more or less calls 72 dead people 'thickos', then bluffs his way out of it while Bull mentions a Shakespearean character and stands down.
Well he seems to accept that himself.

Of course to blame his (lack of) education and in particular his schooling under Mrs Thatcher is a little strange. It could not have been all bad because he managed an 'A' Level (securing a grade A pass) and then went on to gain a 2:1 in Politics and Political History. Not too bad for a working class lad. Perhaps he just wasn't too interested in English Literature. Neither was I (and I was actually allowed to drop out of English Literature classes when both I and my form master realised I was wasting my time). But I still know who Shylock was.

Still now he's no longer standing he will have to rely on his income from Haringey Council ("Cabinet Minister" for Local Development and Economic Growth) and GJ's Karaoke services (of which he is owner and sole trader).
NJ:
He is is owner and sole trader of GJ's Karaoke services.

I wonder if he does

Gromit, what has Fagin to do with this?

I lived in a prominently Jewish area in the 60s. Golders Green and Temple Fortune was 3 miles up the road. The Hasmonean Jewish school was within walking distance of my house. 80% of the kids in my school in Finchley were Jewish.
The first play we studied in English Lit was A Merchant of Venice. Our Teacher regularly took us to the Open Air theatre in Regents Park to watch Shakespearean plays and that included the Jewish pupils as well.

I have heard members of the Jewish community called a load of unpleasant names where I lived as a lad. I never heard them referred to as Shylocks though. I think Mr Bull of Ilford is giving it out.
Violet Elizabeth Bott wrote only yesterday:

I wasn't aware that the term is offensive. The dictionary definition is //A ruthless moneylender; a loan shark.// and that's exactly my interpretation of it. Yes, it emanates from Shakespeare but not once have I ever considered ruthless moneylenders and loan sharks to be necessarily Jewish. I would suggest that anyone who does has a serious problem.

so some of the "deepest thinkers" on AB ( her words, violet's I mean) agree with the Labour thicko

hahahahahaha

I knew my day would come .....

Elections, boys and gurlz, they always bring out the worst in people innit?
//not once have I ever considered ruthless moneylenders and loan sharks to be necessarily Jewish.//

really? stereotypes of Jews as money lenders have persisted from the Middle Ages. historically, money lending had been a fairly common occupation among Jews, in part because Christians were not permitted to practise usury, (charging interest of any kind on loans) and Jews were excluded from many other fields of work. at the same time, most Christian kings forbade Jews to own land for farming or to serve in the government, and craft guilds usually refused to admit Jews as artisans. Thus money lending was one of the few occupations still open to Jews.
PP, In the Dramatis Personae is listed Shylock a rich Jew.
From scene three, Shylock "I hate him, he is a christian"
oh I have anonymised that quote above to avoid causing offence on AB.

I was going to spoof that entry by writing ( but then I decided not to do so)
In my childhoold, I often heard the word Jew, and thought it was like Roman Catholic or Holy Roller - as in
" you have jewed me shlomo, you sheeny pickle" quite innocent it was
and I often heard the word 'boy' - a young lad
as in: "come over high-er boy an kleen my shoes"
offering an indigent ( =poor) street urchin a dime or so ,to polish ma shoes
[ an he might say - yes masta, i'se comin'! ] in Street Essex - Breextaarn branch

and so in conclusion - with Jew used so innocently, and boy used as innocently
I could not believe me ears to be told a conjunction of those two terms- jew-boy was insulting! totally unexpected it was ! troll I immediately thought - s/o is pulling my taser ! this cannot be. It is all fake nooz etc etc - like the rainbow poppy

and then I thought I would [poof it]- as some of these threads are so ridiculuous
I know shylock is a rich Jew - I did MOV at school in 1964. You need to tell that to Mizz Violet ( Eliza Bott]
Sorry PP, I thought that you were agreeing with her.
