Fender, training takes years ,so we do need qualified immigrants in the meantime.

This country has a record for being the best country to immigrate too in view of our generosity with benefits, housing etc. We need to toughen up, and only take in take in the people we need and have jobs to go to, or genuine refugees in danger. Economic migrants should be sent back, regardless.

Immigration apart, we also need offer more training, if necessary, to those on benefits who are fit and able and discontinue benefits for those who are long term benefits when there are jobs they are capable of doing in their area. And it should be a fair system, which is isn't now.

I always wryly chuckle and shake my head whenever I see a news item which states that a boatload of migrants has been intercepted crossing the Channel. Surely the word "intercept" implies that the boat has been prevented from reaching its destination. Why not just say that the migrants have been escorted safely ashore?
