Severe Flooding In Venice
sounds odd but the reality is devastating, watching this beautiful place
get swamped seems unreal. According to the piece on the news yesterday it's mostly the fault of the corrupt politicians, bribery and general bad practice that has caused this catastrophe.

since buckingham palace has not been flooded by the venice floods, then it is NOT global. but nearly you will say
the floods in Venice - I no understand - St marks has been flooded and clearly not for the first time. Yet the damage to the crypt which must be under the sea level most of the time is irreparably damaged.

zay are - sorry they are - - interesting things and were modelled in the 1900s - The height of the surge is dependent on the wind speed, - not the tide as that is a tidal surge and not a storm surge - the angle of the wind to the coast. - most surgey if at 45'C to the coast
and finally - - - the length of straight coast.

This question is about Venice (in Italy). As far as I am aware the remit of the River and Canal Trust does not extend to Italy. And in any case, the main reason flooding has been exacerbated in the UK is not because of lack of funds. It is due to building houses on flood plains and the policies of the Environment Agency which prevent dredging rivers. They prefer to protect the habitats of wildlife rather than that of humans. The Environment Agency's claim that dredging is not suitable is not appropriate for the River Don (the cause of the floods in South Yorkshire). It always used to be dredged and the practice was only stopped when the UK decided it would "gold plate" the EU's Directive on the protection of aquatic habitats.
As for Venice, it floods twice a year. This recent flood is more severe than most but has the same cause: the “aqua alta” phenomenon which is prevalent in the northern Adriatic in the Autumn/Winter. It is the combination of high Spring Tides and the Sirocco and Bora winds which blow northwards along the Adriatic Sea, enhancing the effect of the high tides. It has nothing to do with Climate Change or corrupt politicians.
Venice is a ridiculous place to site a major city. It has been subject to floods ever since it was established. If the Italians are going to spend millions or billions of euros repairing the damage they would do best to spend the money on abandoning the city and relocating it somewhere more suitable. If they must have such a city built on sinking islands they would do better to find a location away from the northern Adriatic.

When Venice was flooded in the 1960s the water level was higher than the present one. No one mentioned climate change back then . However since then they have been building and erecting flood barriers but the project has taken so long and been so slow that some of these huge iron gates have rusted and apparently it will be a few more years before everything is finished. Not to mention the cost involved.
