// How can you tell that the election is over? Because the usual suspects have started picking on the scary little autistic girl again. //

Yes, I find the amount of venom directed at this kid from angry middle aged men slightly creepy to be honest.

Maybe save it up for people who are actually out there causing harm to others - there are plenty to choose from - rather than a 16 yr old with Aspergers that you just happen to find annoying, yet who is doing nothing other than trying to raise awareness about something she thinks is important.

I would ask again, what it she's actually done that's caused anyone a problem?
ludwig //from angry middle aged men slightly creepy to be honest.//
On what evidence do you base this assumption?
I think she's being used.
//I would ask again, what it she's actually done that's caused anyone a problem?//

She hasn't. Those people just don't like being told what to do by a child. It makes no difference what the message is or whether its right or wrong, the fact it's coming from a source that they deem to be below them angers them.

It's sad really, and those who can manage to do nothing more than hurl personal insults at the kid strike me as being lacking in both morals and grey matter.
// On what evidence do you base this assumption? //

Trump, Clarkson, the president of Brazil, most of the angry old men on AB, my own experience of people I know in 'real life'. How old and what sex are you by the way Danny?
I think you're being generous with "middle aged", ludwig ...
// I think she's being used. //

Fair enough, so if she's a victim let's direct the insults at the people who are using her.
I think the way she goes about it gets people’s backs up. That dreadful time when she wept hysterically and spluttered something like ‘How dare you! You’re stealing our dreams’, was to say the least uncomfortable. She came across as a child who was not entirely well and quite out of control.

Futhermore, I think she is creating unnecessary alarm among the young. I was talking to a ten year old the other day. He’s terrified that he’s going to die very soon because she’s convinced him that the end is nigh - not a good state of mind for a little boy. So what has she actually done? A lot of damage - in my opinion.
I remain mystified as to why any adult would take seriously the notions of any sixteen year old, and utterly baffled that the adults who do are in positions of power and influence.

I have believed for years that the obsession with climate change is rooted in self-obsession and an overdeveloped sense of self importance, which is usually the domain of children and students whose needs are cared for, leaving them to pontificate their naivety to anyone who will listen.

This young lady is undoubtedly sincere - but her modern Joan Of Arc schtick is simply fodder for the social media users who enjoy telling each other how right they are - and politicians looking for the young vote wherever they are in the world.
// I think you're being generous with "middle aged", Ludwig //

I know. I didn't want to be rude, but that's another thing worth mentioning. She's 16, and therefore entitled to be more concerned about the state of the planet, than most of us on here who'll probably be dead soon.

I count myself in that group - I don't really care about the future of the human race because I won't be around for much longer, so I honestly couldn't give a toss, but what does wind me up is this kind of whining nastiness about someone that does happen to care.
> leaving them to pontificate their naivety

Clearly you don't have a problem with the principle of that, so it must just be the size of her platform that concerns you ...
Ludwig. I am a male octogenarian who hasn't maligned the young Greta.
// This young lady is undoubtedly sincere - but her modern Joan Of Arc schtick is simply fodder for the social media users who enjoy telling each other how right they are //

She's autistic mate. Cut her a bit of slack, you know - like you always do for psychopaths, terrorists, and the like.
Ellipsis - // Clearly you don't have a problem with the principle of that, so it must just be the size of her platform that concerns you ... //

It doesn't concern me particularly, I accept it as the downside of mass social interaction via the Internet.

Young people whose unformed black-and-white notions of the way the world turns have been part of growing up since time began, now have world-wide stages from which to pontificate their ideas.

The problem is, just because more people hear and see a teenager's views, does not make them any more valid, or educated, or better argued, than anyone else's.

To paraphrase Doctor Johnson -

To see and hear an adolescent lecturing adults on subjects they can, by definition, only know a little about, is like watching a dog walking on its hind legs -

It is not that it is not done well, it is that one is surprised to see it done at all.
//So what has she actually done?//

I think the most important thing she's done is that she's raised awareness and forced people to confront the situation. You speak of the concerned 10 year old you spoke to Naomi. While I don't want to see any child being scared by this, it's good that his awareness is now such that conversations on the subject have resulted. Hopefully, he'll be badgering his parents into doing the little things that will go towards preserving the planet.
Ludwig - // She's autistic mate. Cut her a bit of slack, you know - like you always do for psychopaths, terrorists, and the like. //

First of all, I am aware of the young lady's autism, which merely adds to my repugnance at the way she is manipulated by adults who have responsibility for her, who should know better and should be ashamed of themselves.

Secondly, I have offered no direct criticism of the young lady, so I have no need to 'cut her a bit of slack' as you put it.

And thirdly, I have never 'cut a bit of slack' for any psychopaths, terrorists and the like.
Mozz - // I think the most important thing she's done is that she's raised awareness and forced people to confront the situation. //

I think you are drastically over-estimating her impact and importance.

The majority of people who agree are those who agreed anyway, the politicians who appear to be 'taking notice' have their finely tuned antenna out for any bandwagon that makes them look good and hopefully translates into votes, and the actual alteration in terms of meaningful effect and change remains as it always has been - non-existent.
> Secondly, I have offered no direct criticism of the young lady, so I have no need to 'cut her a bit of slack' as you put it.

Are you so old that you've already forgotten why ludwig was suggesting you cut her some slack, even as you answered him? Phrases like "her modern Joan Of Arc schtick" ...

And are you so cowardly that you'll write the following and then, when challenged, claim it wasn't a "direct criticism of the young lady":

> I have believed for years that the obsession with climate change is rooted in self-obsession and an overdeveloped sense of self importance, which is usually the domain of children and students whose needs are cared for, leaving them to pontificate their naivety to anyone who will listen
//I think you are drastically over-estimating her impact and importance//

I disagree about her impact. I think, because of the previously discussed used of Social Media platforms, her impact has been massive. Why it was left to a little girl with Aspergers to have such an impact is a better question.

She recently spoken about stepping away from the spotlight a little next year. I hope that she is allowed to do that.
// I think you are drastically over-estimating her impact and importance. //

There again, all the more reason to simply ignore her and get on with one's own life. Turn the central heating up a bit, switch a few extra lights on and bask in the knowledge that we haven't been bullied into anything unreasonable by a Swedish teenager.
