I think you should, but these days laws may well prevent this as these schools are saying (or are they using that as a convenient excuse?)

Thoughts?

It's a dodgy thing to allow. Cements privilege into the system. Smacks of racism and snobbery.

So you object to bursaries being given only to poor people then?
Why would they need an excuse to refuse a donation?
No ... but it happens - and since it happens what's good for one should be good for another.

It's a wonderful offer by Professor Sir Bryan Thwaites, however his choice is to include the stipulation 'white' and the Schools are entitled to take or reject that offer.

To aid those disadvantaged is marvellous, not sure it needs that extra qualification - but his gift to give.
So what about "Stormzy's" (who?) offer to fund two black students, then? Is that OK?
To give gifts with caveats or qualifications is the same in both cases and many others - it's the giver's choice.
^^ Stormzy ... a popular, modern entertainer of the "Rap" variety, M'Lud.
Whether or not Stormzy's offer is ok is irrelevant , in this case

It's up to the colleges , if they want to accept the money or not
the builder

Have you ever tried working in the sax into some rap ?
Anyway... Scholarships and bursaries are offered to Jewish students and probably to Muslim ones as well.

Stormzy's offer can only do good for the students involved. This chap's offer should also be taken at it's face value. Either that, or nobody should be able to benefit in this way.
Thanks, Builder. Unfortunately I don't know what the "Rap" variety is. My knowledge of music falls into three categories: Classical (Brahms, Mozart, that sort of thing); Jazz (traditional or "Big Band"only) and "Pop" (predominantly pre-1970 but with one or two concessions to later artists up to about 1985).

Does Mr Stormzy have another name? e.g. is he "Dave Stormzy" or "Stormzy Gillespie"?
Baz ..... No I haven't, but there's no reason why not. Like HipHop, it's basically rhythmic and percussive...... it's all just a beat, after all ;o)
Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. ... M'Lud.

Apologies, YMB, I seem to have derailed the thread ;o(
well you can offer what you like but Its up tio the institution to accept or refuse and I can see and support why they refused. For one thing, how are you going to judge who is white enough or posh enough? As I see it the subtle difference between what Stormzy has done and this is that he gives the money directly to the student and does not require the educational establishment to be involved in the process....I'd still like to know how he will decide who is black enough though....
If educational establishments did their job properly then it wouldn’t matter the ethnic background.

It should be done on grades. On a merit system. Does the student that makes the grade need a bursary? Yes, then they get one. If not then they don’t.

There should be no question of white, black, Muslim, Jewish etc etc etc getting an unfair advantage so if they make the grade they get in.

Otherwise you dilute the entry requirement and that can be a recipe for disaster.

To get into many American colleges Asian women have to get a higher score than white males and white males have to get a higher score than black males. The dropout of black males in college is higher than any other.

Obviously that’s in the US but what is the % drop out here?
Oh no. Not surprising.
White working-class boys consistently underperform compared to black, Asian and other racial groups. That's been shown again and again. Why shouldn't some of them be given a helping hand - other groupings do?
His money, his choice. Their schools, their choice. Cutting nose, to spite face comes to mind. Virtue signalling?
//Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. ... M'Lud.//

Thanks. I can understand why he uses a pseudonym. I still think "Dave Owuo" would have been better.

It's my apologies that are due. I started the derailment.
