As Spicey says. The Green Eco warrior lobby in Australia has,apparently, successfully outlawed the usual practice of cutting down vegetation in order to create fire breaks. It doesn't stop bush fires but minimises the intensity and extra damage and death now caused to human and animal life.

When I was in the Fire Service many years ago we were attending a big fire on a mountain in Wales and could see someone on a motor bike on another mountain next to the one we were on starting more fires. These had taken hold by the time we got to them and as a consequence of this spent many more hours at night putting them out. We too wish we could have got hold of the person lighting them as apart from anything else we couldn't attend any other incidents which could have caused loss of life as it has done in Austrailia.
