I guess from a purely legalistic viewpoint, it has to be 31-1-20. Mrs NJ and I - most unexpectantly - celebrated on 24th June ‘16 (my local Waitrose had almost run out of assorted alcoholic fizz by 10am). However, neither we nor our fellow celebrants envisaged the guerrilla warfare that would be waged in the following three and a half years as the Great and the...

Definitely the latter.
The 12th of never.
Get two.
It isn’t really an independence day though is it?
We have not thrown off the shackles of a monarchy and replaced it with self rule.
Prior to 1973 we were not ‘independent’, and after 31st January we will not be.
We joined a club, and then we left a club.
We joined a club, which turned into a controlling authority, then escaped from it.
31 Jan will be much the same as being released from prison with provisions!
Gromit// shackles of a monarchy//
Poppycock.
....... and a tag!
If we're going to have a day off, let's have it in the summer, we can celebrate better.
Perhaps it should be at the end of the transition period. Let's have 3 days then. (Although we already mark New Year.)

gromit still munching on sour grapes I see, the monarchy is a figure head elected politicians will once again run the country.
//We joined a club, and then we left a club.//

Yes, but by stealth it had incrementally transformed itself into being a completely different club from the one we joined.
we won't know until the history books are written
Even when the books are written we won't know definitively, woofgang.
It'll depend on how a given author views events and how the same is promoted as 'the truth'.

A lot like Answerbank really, bray long and loud until dissenters shrug and move on realising how unimportant it all was.
Are you implying return of control of ourselves to ourselves is unimportant ?
I guess everything is unimportant to an infinite sized universe here for an infinite length of time.
Nobody remembers the date we joined the EU, I don't think the date of leaving will be a date history will remember that much. (Not sour grapes before anyone starts, its just political dates aren't usually remembered historically)
God I wish TTT would stop calling the EU EUSSR.
Yawn.
