some 50 years ago we were following a car over the Chiswick Flyover. The car ahead of us had an upside down inflatable boat jammed on the roof. My Dad was driving and had just commented that he couldn't see any fastenings on it (and he was giving it plenty of space) when a gust of wind took it and it blew off the car and landed flat against our windscreen! Fortunately seconds later it blew off again and flew over our car and we were safe again. I never knew the end of the story. A very scarey moment indeed.

The silliest example I ever saw was when driving out of B&Q I followed a man on a scooter, who had just bought a pair of steps and had strapped it across the back seat. He had made some attempt at safety, he'd scrawled "Wide load" on a piece of cardboard and had it fixed to his back.

I know the answer is no because I read answerbank - ter daaah !

any engineers out there ( you know they add, hold clipboards and scratch on bits of paper) ? the frame is aluminium, and doesnt weigh a lot - so the cengtre of gravity wont be raised v much

doesnt offer much wind resistance as it is a frame only- so wont make the car unstable

or in short - yeah well they did take the glass out you know !
( Talk about greenhouse gasses...) or glasses that is !

PP - my thoughts exactly. Low wind resistance, low mass, so probably more stable than bicycles on the roof. The only naughty bit is that it might be sticking out too far.

I recall my mother-in-law recalling a visit to her native Ireland, and coming into Dublin to link up to transport home.

She was amazed to see a man on a bike travelling at some speed, holding into a rope, at the other end of which was a baby's pram, complete with baby, being towed along through the city streets.
