It’s obvious from the statement by Lochaber Rescue Team that they’re fed up of ill-equipped morons endangering all concerned. As I said on the surfer thread, this needs to be made an offence.

Anyone who can defend this on the basis that they walked Ben Nevis or Llanberis pass in trainers one summer's day is as stupid as those who did it in Winter and shows a complete lack of knowledge. I doubt a single member of a mountain rescue team would agree with you TD.

I highly recommend them.
I just checked my Amazon account, it was five years ago that I bought them. Still going strong.

Try googling "I want to climb Ben Nevis in the winter wearing trainers"
the answer you get is "you're an idiot. Stay at home".

Barmaid, all boots offer is Ankle support. Trail trainers are common on the mountain for their grip and light weight. Trainers also offer more precise weight placement when scrambling which is nice in the summer, when you can be sure the weather won't get too cold.
They don't provide some new ability or knowledge that would have helped the boys in the article.
People who climb a mountain in trainers aren't always idiots. But, if you have to google that before climbing then you probably should have some ankle support because you should always be prepared.

The issue with UK mountains is that they all have a touristy aspect about them so they are underestimated and usually guest people from all diversities and abilities who, if are only in the UK for a couple of days, will try and accomplish them no matter what the weather. Ben Nevis is particularly troublesome because of how high and far north it is so it gets a lot of snow which hides the path and soon makes a fun outing turn into a hunt for the main path
TD, to the average "jo public", trainers doesnt mean trail trainers.
Fact is, you are giving a very irresponsible view of things. A walk up the pony track in the summer might be OK with trainers 9/10 times. But if a weather front moves in, it could soon become quite different. I wouldnt do it.
Fact is, these four were absolutely blinking idiots. They should be condemned as such. With your experience of hill walking going on about "victim shaming" blah blah you probably ought to be saying "dont do this, it is stupid, you may die". But we all know you'd rather make a point than ever back down.
(And I do know a little bit about hill-walking - I reckon I bagged my first munro about 30 years ago. With ALL the right equipment and the knowledge of how to use it!).
I'm out now.

//The mountain rescue team also hit back at demands that mountaineers and hill walkers be charged fees and insurance following the incident.
The statement added: ‘Where do you stop, insurance for fishing, rugby, football all of which have more incidents and injuries than mountaineering.’ They added that the rescuers are all mountaineers who volunteer their services at absolutely minimal cost to the public purse and that insurance would lead to a professional service which would require dozens of full time paid people, all funded by the tax payer.//
