A British man who had been on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship has died from coronavirus, Japan's Health Ministry says.

He is the first British person to die from Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
i wonder what will happen when the virus hits africa india pakistan afghanistan as there hiccup public health service somewhat lacking.
Question Author
no idea, but it could turn out to be far worse than
flu...
London should give us a clue, fender.
Question Author
thanks, i am staying well away from people.......
Yes... I saw today from local paper, that people from a school skiing trip to North Italy, are isolated now. The school is about 10 minutes from me.
Question Author
indeed Pixie, there have been other schools that have closed due to the virus, this isn't good...
Death rate is currently 3.4% of those infected.

I'm not losing any sleep!
Question Author
perhaps not, but it's sad that people are losing their lives to this virulent virus.
Yes, it really is. But, also, I don't think there is anything we can do ourselves now, except wait and see. Panic and worrying won't help x
1 death and 17 cases.

Compared with regular flu which kills 17,000 annually.
In fact over the last few years, flu deaths have been increasing sharply, and those extra annual deaths will far exceed coronavirus deaths in UK.

So while a new virus is exciting, it is probably distracting us from a far bigger story, that of regular flu killing increasing numbers over the last 5 years.
Question Author
the last figures from the BBC News was something like 8,000 deaths which is bad enough,
It has been described as "a bad flu" so I won't be losing any kip, either, despite having type 2.
Gromit, out of interest, what is 17,000 out of the percentage that contact flu? And what is the percentage with coronavirus?
Question Author
Gromit, where did you get the 17 thousand figure from for flu deaths....
All this scaremongering is getting on my wick !! I am not in the least worried about it. There are billions and billions of people in the world and a very small number MAY have it and not everyone who gets it will die anyway. I'm more concerned about the money being wasted on HS2 which could be better directed getting homeless kids off the streets and helping the NHS and so on. Get a grip !
There's 19 cases here now, at lunchtime news. If I got it I seriously doubt I'd beat it so I'm worried.
My son already has asthma, so I want him to avoid it too. But some proper statistics would help.
I wish they’d make an effort to stop calling it “Coronavirus”
The common cold is a coronavirus.
Probably too late now
I think gromit has the US figures,,,,
