Am I missing something here?

"The row erupted when Dr Poen responded to a tweet by a Twitter user called 'Lilo the Autistic Queer' which read: 'Not everyone who menstruates is female. Not everyone who is female menstruates. Let's shift our language.'"
I hate to break it to 'Lilo the Autistic Queer', but the ONLY people who menstruate are women.
On a scale on 1 to 10, with 10 being you're a total ***, how much of a *** is 'Lilo the Autistic Queer'?

In India/{akistand/Nepal, the 3rd sex is known as Hijra, Samoa it's the Fa'afafines, Madagascar the Sekrata and Indonesia, the Warias.
Then there are third sexes in Mexico - the Muxes, The Oman - Xaniths, Indonesia has also five sexes defined in the Bugis tribe.
In old North American Indian sociert 'two-spirited people' were recognised and in Judaism there are six sexes. There's also a third gender in the Dominican Republic.
I'm not going into a long and detailed account of their practices and beliefs and the tensions therein - for the Hijras, it's almost been a lower caste status thanks to the Brits not recognising them, even declaring them illegal. The point is that these societies tolerate the third sex and may be there are some learning lessons to be had about assimilation and being more appreciative of the psychology that defines our sexual wants and behavioural responses in society.
I'd also like to take 'issue' with an early 1st page point that Naomi made when she laid into men becoming female - it is 'hey, it works the other way around, there's quite a rise in FtMs out there - I know of one in the States who has gone to extraordinary lengths to change her life to his.....in fact, termed tumtum in Judaism and calalai in the Bugis tribe.

When stories like this hit the press I can almost hear my trans friend going shut up morons you are making it worse. You don't gain acceptance by putting everyone else on the defensive. You do it by quietly living your truth and proving that you are not a threat to anyone's beliefs.
Genetic females usually menstruate yes we get that
Genetic males can't at the moment. The development of uterus transplants makes it theoretically possible
Trans men prior to hysterectomy if they go that route do
It's straight forward, be who you want to be, define yourself as anything you like just be a decent human being. And shut up about things that don't really matter.
You are getting on my genetically linked t I t s

maybe the answer to the sports conundrum is to abandon gender-specific competitions, leagues, whatever, and for sports participants to compete as people, and to compete at the highest level purely on ability. if this ends up making x-x athletes feeling disadvantaged, they can always train harder until they can compete equally.
Maybe we could be supplied with a definitive list of things 'that matter' so avoiding such clashes and outbursts.
I realise it woud have to be updatable so the latest wheeze could be added but at least it would give the vast majority of people a chance at navigating the rarified regions of Lookatme without putting somebody off their beetroot and caramel smoothie.

Such non-binary people AREN'T 'female' but they CAN menstruate. Hence the statement "only females menstruate" is both wrong and grossly offensive to such people.

Sorry, but that is the biggest load of garbage I have read for some time.
No such thing as "non-binary".. You are one or the other, he/she, male/female.
That's all. Apart from the odd birth defect.
There’s something very odd going on in our society. If I refer to a man dressed in a frock as ‘he’ Jim tells me I’m likely to get a slap, and Mozz is free to call anyone who disagrees with him an *** - and in both instances not a word said in protest. Can either - or anyone - tell me why any of that is acceptable? Had anyone threatened a trans person with a slap or called any one of them an *** it wouldn’t have been.
DTC, I haven’t laid into anyone.
Incidentally, you’ll no doubt remember the woman who chooses to identify as a man who gave birth to a baby and wanted to be registered as the child’s father. A judge has ruled that she is the mother. Well done that judge!
As Scott said, ‘O, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive’ …. and claiming to be something you’re not is deceit.

That I agree with wholeheartedly.
I think, Naomi, you are in danger of taking colourful rhetoric a bit too literally sometimes. When we say that so-and-so "deserves a slap", it's rare that anyone is actually going to *give* them one. It's a turn of phrase.
I also think the point I was making is that if you make an *issue* out of calling a trans person (which, to be clear, is not remotely the same as a man dressed in a frock) "he", if you repeatedly do it deliberately to make some kind of point and persist after being asked to stop, then at that point maybe there'd be good reason to ask you to move on. I'm sure there are some people around who would brook no dissent whatsoever, and I regret that they exist because they do ruin any effort to try and persuade people to accept them, but equally it's not unreasonable to ask for tolerance. Heck, if you don't like calling a trans woman "she", then why not just stick to "they", or maybe always use their given name?

Mozz, your response was to my ‘Hes are ‘hes and she’s are shes’. That’s telling the truth - something that should require neither apology nor explanation - nor should it induce anyone to become abusive.
Jim, people can call themselves whatever they like and live whatever life they like but they have no business demanding that others join them in their lie or support them in their fantasy.
//colourful rhetoric//
Come off it Jim! You know very well that when you said that you meant it.
//if you don't like calling a trans woman "she", then why not just stick to "they", or maybe always use their given name?//
Because frankly I don’t consider it reasonable to demand that anyone should be obliged to pussyfoot around on eggshells simply to indulge others in their world of make-believe. Their problems are theirs - not mine or anyone else's.

People are who they are, and when it comes to gender identity at least, maybe a bit more willingness to entertain that the human experience is more diverse than you give it credit for is worth considering. If you still insist on calling all trans people by "he/she", that's your privilege, but they aren't obliged to indulge you in that if it's their party.
