Which doubters do you mean? I think everyone hear knows that there will lots of deaths, particularly among the more vulnerable groups- both the over 70s and those with underlying medical conditions like this poor man. Apparently he was diagnosed 2 years ago as having only 2 years to live.

He had motor neurone diease, a life limiting terminal condition. It's sad he died before he would normally but he would have been in a high risk group.

I guess Canary means those on this site who have said they and theirs are carrying on as normal, even when suffering cold symptoms and are laughing at what they see as scaremongering.....but others see as concern and a willingness to do the right thing.
Yes, Craig had MND but he did so much to protect himself and others. More than can said for those I've mentioned above.

Yes who are the "doubters"?

I've read most of the posts on the virus issue and I cannot recall anybody suggesting it did not exist or that it was not serious. What I have seen is considerable discussion about the way it has been handled, the prospects of successfully preventing its spread and some debate over the sense of perspective that seems to have been lost. There has also been some discussion about why people are stripping the supermarket shelves bare, buying 10 to 20 times what they would normally need. But I don't see anybody portrayed as "doubters"?

Canary42 - I assume you're referring to people who have written such things as:

'Hysteria whipped up by the MSM. They are loving it.'

'I'll await the vaccine, thanks again'

'I have had a cold and just carried on as normal and here I am still alive and kicking and not in the least worried.'

I can actually understand why people think like this. At the moment it doesn't seem like Covid-19 could affect anyone close to us and that the steps currently being taken, are overkill.

I don't think we should just soldier one like some advocate.

But then again - we have irrefutable evidence of man's impact on the planet - climate change and plastic pollution, but we still have people metaphorically sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting "La la la la".

sp that was my reaction to the idea from some scientists that we'd have to in the end fight this with "herd" immunity. That Idea seems to have fallen out of favour now. I was in no way trivialising the situation merely saying that if we are all going to get it anyway then what's the point in what's being done. That is now off the agenda it seems so the measures being taken are appropriate.

there must be a phrase to describe where people latch onto a peripheral point ( 'herd') and totally lose sight of the true point.

Any model is gonna be based on how many infections get passed on by each ill persons. Less than one and the disease dies out.
The herd bit is where you breathe over someone and they dont get it because they have had it before

This is usually taken as 90% but the modellers are mentioning MUCH lower ratios such as 20% as borne out by Wuhan - 11m pop, 88 000 infections and it is dying out so the infection/passing on ratio MUST be less than one

so I think they have dropped the word "herd" - but the idea is still theeeere!

It was never suggested that it could be fought with “herd immunity”

The CSO at the time (I know because I heard him say it) said that “we need people to get the virus as it helps spread immunity” (also true of course) but he never mentioned “herd immunity” which suddenly became the subject of lots of newspaper articles.

Does it though? Is there any evidence to show that if you get this virus and recover from it, that a) you can't get it again (i.e. you're now immune) and b) you can't become a carrier once you've recovered, continuing to infect others even though you're not suffering yourself?

that's how the immune system works ellipsis, once the body has created the anti bodies the body is then immune from that virus. It's also how vaccines are developed often using the antibodies of recovered victims to synthesise new anti bodies. Strictly speaking most vaccinations etc are primarily ways of encouraging the body's own defences to defeat the infection.
