The government here should do the same. Something like this would offer hope, I think, yet not raise expectations
- we have 5 tests for when to relax
-we will review whether we meet them when the current 3 week period ends
- when those are met we will start to slowly relax things on a phased basis and will be guided by the science. The earliest this will start is end May but could be later if certain criteria are not met
- 2m social distancing is likely to remain for some time
- consideration is being given to issuing masks to public
- we hope to open schools on a phased basis as soon as it's safe to do so and proper distancing can be ensured.. This may involve prioritising certain age groups
- we will gradually extend the range of shops that can open but will need to keep that under review and may have to tighten at times and ensure the 2m rules are adhered to and masks are worn -
- Hairdressers will reopen when safe to do so but PPE will have to be used by customers and staff
- we will work with scientists to work out when it's safe to expand tubes, bus and train services but will need to ensure proper PPE in place for all staff and users. It is unlikely the full service will be resumed within the next 3 months.
- no plans to allow mass gatherings (sporting, concerts, theatres) before Autumn but will keep under constant review.
- pubs will remain closed for at least a few months but well keep under constant review from summer onwards
- we'll reopen hotels and beaches when safe to do so and provided 2m distancing can be put in place.
- we'll work with restaurants to come up with opening arrangements that allow social distancing, and this will be phased in over a period of a few months
- continue to encourage home working and require all employers to come up with a plan for home working/staggered hours that guarantees 2m distancing before employees can return to work.
-work with other countries to discuss a timetable for reopening airports/flights provided 2m distancing or a pretesting programme can be put in place
Something like that. Offer hope but make it clear it depends on the science, will be a slow gradual process and may take a long time.
The issue of the shielding also needs to be covered. I'm not sure whether Nicola covered that
We will next update you on this on 15th May and will issue period updates thereafter

I don’t see how political point scoring comes into it.
Scotland and N Ireland (and Wales) have a big advantage at the moment in that they actually have a working PM. I suspect England will have to wait for its PM to return before anything happens.
In fact, many businesses and factories are already reopening.
