Something tells me the Icelanders are being modest. Based on the population comparison, the UK would need to boldly build up an approximately 32,000 strong tracing team within a very few weeks and get the co-operation of the public to help with its work. Which is easier, for one person to find a lost needle in a given area or 100 people to search for 100 lost needles in 100 times the area ? An immediate recognition would need to without the slightest hesitation acknowledge that whatever it costs is worth it. Or is it really easier for 100 people to build and pay for a house than for 10,000 people to build and pay for 100 houses ? I am unconvinced of the benefit of being a small group unless the smaller one is significantly better organised and more imaginative/determined than the larger one. On the other hand, being truly united in purpose will be a distinct advantage as will having a certain preparedness at different levels (physically and culturally). And there we have some reasons why not......

If BoJo doesnt start getting people back to work soon there will be massive loss of jobs and a totally knackered economy. Instead of saving the NHS it will wreck it as there will be no taxes being collected to pay for it and trillions owed due to the extra borrowing that cannot be paid back.
Yes, it is jobs over health (for some). If the retired and anyone else doesnt want to go out fine - dont go out but the vast majority(circa 95%) of the public will be fine with Covid but many more will risk death by poverty and mental health issues.
It's either get us back or risk civil unrest and the Tories in the wilderness for decades. They will not be forgiven if people are too broke to enjoy life.
Imo, Iceland's stats, were of interest when they were the only country that had done mass testing.
Now more mass testing is being done, they appear to be an outlier.
The traffic light Smart Phone App is a great idea.

But sadly the The NHS contact tracing app will be a heap of krap and will not work properly. For it to work, it has to be the front open application and not running in the background. But people don’t use their phones like that, so the app will only collect data intermittently. Data needs to be collected all the time, in the background, and the NHS App doesn’t do that.

Germany and France who were ahead of us have already abandoned their own apps are are now working closely with the Google-Apple collaboration (GA). GA have addressed and solved the privacy concerns, will be built into the iOS and Android Operating systems. A third party app produced for Governments will never be as good as Google’s and Apple’s engineers combined effort.
