Having daily briefings,( note I say daily) same questions, same answers, very little to be achieved. The time spent preparing drafts for speeches / correcting/altering and so forth. Are there really enough hours in the day to waste. Would it not be more lucrative for these people to spend their time on ideas / planning of what might work, and might not, what would be a way forward, you get my meaning I'm sure.
The public still need to know what's happening and when, but I'm sure this could be condensed into a briefing every third day, giving more time for the powers that be to work on the main problem. Daily totals for infection / deaths can be given to the media.
Should they feel any new, urgent news need to be given to the public, this can be arranged in no time at all.
12.24 There always will be one silly answer, who said I did watch them, who said I didn't, but most not so silly people know about them. But eh oh stick to the question or go away.
All the relevant information is posted on Government websites anyway.
There is no reason at all to have a talking head on everyday. Particularly when it’s the feckless, Matt, Priti, Sunak or Gove.
It looks suspiciously like a Government trying to be seen to be doing something, when what they are actually doing is wasting time going through a pointless damage limitation exercise.
I don’t see the problem with the briefings. Hopefully soon they may well be less frequent.
But I could very easily see someone like you moaning if we’d not had them.
There’s a world of difference between a bland press release and a face-on briefing.
And questions from the media
12.33 Don't think you or Roy completely understand the point, its not a question of weather one watches it, it about putting effort into what's more important.
Gromit, I do remember one broadcaster lambasting them in the early stages of the pandemic here for NOT having a daily briefing. You can never please everyone. I like the medical briefings with the charts and some of the questions but I'd be happy to limit it to 15 minutes of questions and some of the initial briefings could do with being a bit less repetitive- I can always finish off Raab's sentences for him based on the first couple of words
ff is correct, there was criticism that we were not being kept informed at first - they can't win with some people. Personally I enjoy them (if that is the right description) I look forward to them each day as it passes the time and now we seem to be heading in the right direction it is good to see how things are improving.
//its not a question of weather one watches it, it about putting effort into what's more important.//
That's why they take it in turns. As much as anything it's about continuously hammering home the message to stay in and maintain social distancing to dimwits.
I bet if they stopped doing it the press would start complaining about cover ups and lack of transparency etc.
// and now we seem to be heading in the right direction it is good to see how things are improving. //
Except things are not improving, and we are not heading in the right direction. The UK graph is sadly still rising at the same angle and shows no sign of levelling off.

I can well understand the need for such in the early stages, but not now, on a daily basis.
Does that translate as
I can well understand the need for such in the early stages when I said we should have daily briefings, but not now, on a daily basis when I have said we shouldn't have daily briefings.
“As much as anything it's about continuously hammering home the message to stay in and maintain social distancing to dimwits.”
Thankfully it’s not about that of course and it’s also perfectly possible to have briefings and also have coverups and lack of transparency.
That’s why it’s good to have the press there.
things change from day to day. The Germans have just heard that their infection rate is going up again. I've no problem with daily briefings, though it would help if the people in charge stuck to the known facts rather than raising hopes with wild claims about having 100,000 tests a day.
actually I disagree. I like to get a short daily direct factual briefing on how things are going. And as has been said, no one needs to watch who desn't want to.
