Although I'd agree that in principle we probably shouldn't bestow honours and monuments to people that have done horrible things, I'm wondering where does it end? Will any statues actually be left if we're judging everything by today's standards.

//who cares what Colston looked like?//

I do. I look at any statue I come across. I like to connect history to a face and figure.

//We could have more statues of dogs. //

Go to Swansea. There has been a statue of 'Swansea Jack' long before I was a lad and erected by grateful stevedores.

We have the internet for that now...
retro, would you mind posting the link please? I'd quite like to see how it was worded, especially.
^^ for the Bristol poll.
"//I would argue that if you don't vote then you don't care. // "
naomi "That I presume would mean that in the event of a low vote for change the status quo would be maintained. Would you apply that to any other public vote - a general election, a referendum .... you know the kind of thing."

no naomi it means that you don't care enough either way to go out and vote....therefore whichever choice gets the majority vote from those who voted ie those who do care....the non voters won't mind.
and in fact that is what does apply to other public votes....no one says that the party who was in power before a general election should stay in power because not voting chooses the status quo.
//whichever choice gets the majority vote from those who voted ie those who do care....the non voters won't mind. //

That's what happened so the decision should have been accepted. Seemingly it wasn't.

I had a feeling that there would be a reaction when the Michael Jackson statue was removed from outside Fulham's ground. He spent most of his life trying to be "not black" as well.

Woofgang reminds us “ I'd keep this one....only investigate the detail if you have got a massively strong stomach.

Thanks for the reminder, Woofgang. And it (vivesection) still goes on. Quieter, with less publicity, but thousands of totally innocent animals are tortured and killed each year for ‘our’ benefit.

Joke of some sort, Peter?
Somebody mentioned this statue bothering activist earlier on.
Actually viewing it gives a clearer picture.
I reckon it's fair to say she didn't have a clue who Churchill was.
Maybe a lot of younger people don't. Seems mighty strange to me.

That's really humorous Spice, some of the comments underneath tickled me.
Oh. I'll have to have a look.
Out with Gandhi & Mandela as they have not directly benefitted UK.
Good point about Afro-Caribbeans* venerating Churchill unless they just liked the name Winston.
*Not sure if we're allowed to say that now. I don't keep up to date.
The extent of this ex traunts knowledge is Churchill was a cute nodding dog that skateboards and sells insurance. :-(
