I get all the "people should feed their own children" and "they get child benefit" points. However, I found it strange when I saw this yesterday. Marcus rashford was said to have raised £20m that would provide around 3m meals. That seems really expensive meals to me, seeing as this article says eligible families could get £15 pw which is about 1/2 the price per meal of the top figure. Why the disparity I wonder?

Mozz--- I was merely asking what parents did with the benefits and now free vouchers ?? F or your information we raised 5 children without the aid of free school dinners .My OH had to finish work in his mid forties after several operations. Yet we managed. Without
benefits or free vouchers.
I cannot imagine either of my sons being able to survive on FF's menu.
Good for you Andres, and I sincerely mean that and admire you for getting through the hardships, but not everyone is so lucky, especially through a time of furloughing, job losses and social distancing.

blimey how old are you andres? Didn't family allowance start in the 40s??
FF is assuming parents can or will cook. Homemade soup? many can't even make an omelette or fry an egg. Some on here say their parents never got benefits -well disregarding those AB'ers not brought up in the UK, Family allowance as it was called, was paid to every child, through the mother, and was replaced with Child Benefit. Every child got free milk in the morning and if you were very poor free school dinners.
It enrages me to see obviously morbidly obese mothers wailing on the news how are they going to cope trying to feed their kids! Well eat less yourself would be a good start! I know fresh healthy food costs more than crap food, but many parents haven't got the skills to use left-overs and eek out fresh ingredients -its easier to give the kids a maccy D. Children should not go hungry in this country and I think giving out vouchers to those eligible children is correct under these circumstances. Going forward more money should be put into adult education to teach people Domestic skills including budgeting and cooking.
100% agree with you APG. Infuriates me when, particularly female bimbo luvvies, boast they can't boil an egg or boil water and think it is amusing. They might think they look glamourous but they ain't fit to have kids.
Is that correct, Polly? I thought the main breadwinner paid less tax per child until it was replaced with child benefit which is paid to the main carer. You know, just in case the main breadwinner spent the extra in the pub...
Despite the generalisations, I agree with much of what you said there Polly. Better kitchen skills are essential.
I agree with Aunt Polly too , well said
Retro - do you think the people who're insulting couldn't afford to buy the food in?
bednobs-- Yes we did have family allowance and sick pay but no extra on top . I meant we did not have any of the benefits that people seem to get nowadays.

family allowance is the equivalent of child benefit now
// Homemade soup? many can't even make an omelette or fry an egg.//

Then maybe they should take the trouble to learn how to do the very basic tasks, there are always excuses to be made.
Maybe they should bring back home economics in schools. Or at least food tech. It is a vital skill.
Why should they zeb..when the taxpayer is willing to bail them out for their lifestyle choices?
And homemade soup is easier to make than an omelette.
My kids do/have done food tech - seems to consist of desserts or meals based around chicken breast :(
yes famiily allowance was paid in the 1950s -- nothing for the first child and I think it was8/- weekly for the second and following children .

I'm just pointing out when you say "we managed. Without benefits"
you didnt
Funny old World. Last week I was reading that there is an obesity crisis amongst our young as well as the adults(usually the parents of the obese kids) and that this has lessened our overall ability to combat the virus. Now, the new and exciting idea is to hand out free food to kids outside the usual school term time when they were fed by the school. Let's get this right then schools provide no education but they will feed already overfed kids? May as well close the schools for good considering their overall worth to the Country anyway, turn them all into giant mess hall for kids and retrain the teachers to cook and wait on. This would cause problems on "teacher training days" ( haha the very concept makes me giggle) so they could perhaps give em double the day before and a big top up the day after.
