IMO what has occurred hasn't so much shown the strength of the Union, but more the weaknesses of the ill advised devolving of powers. It's ludicrous to have one set of rules one side of an internal national border, and another set the other side. (Worse, it seems that the worst, most extreme practice eventually gets taken up by the whole instead of spreading best practice everywhere.)
