Virgin Atlantic files for bankruptcy, WH Smiths looking at 1500 job cuts William Hill permanently shut 199 shops and small businesses now fearing they have just none weeks left before they run out of cash.

Looks like things are going to get very bumpy.

We have booked a cottage near Alnwick for a week in Sept. I just hope that pubs, restaurants, places of interest etc. will be open so I can support our economy whilst -at last- not having to cook every day!
You're wrong again Gromit.

The money I paid has supported the UK travel agent I paid money to, an agent that employs many UK taxpayers.

The money I paid includes a flight on a UK airline, an airline that employs thousands of UK taxpayers.

People should be following my lead in supporting these UK companies.
Feel free to be wrong again...
You are spending your money (either directly or through an agent) in another country. That is NOT supporting the UK economy no matter how much you want to delude yourself.

EasyJet Plc is based in the UK, but the bulk of it operation is EasyJet Europe based in Austria. It was only after the Referendum vote they opened a UK company, EasyJet UK, based in an Hanger at Luton Airport.
Nice try Gromit, but ultimately a fail.

You really do need to try a bit harder.

The money I have spent has supported UK jobs; no matter how you fail to spin it, it is a cast iron undeniable fact my money has supported UK jobs, jobs that are held by UK taxpayers.

You've lost this one.
Deskdiary @ 21.15, May I also add to my reply to you @ 21.35 you also talk an awful lot of Bull Excrement.
^^^good - thanks for that. At least I know where I stand.
Suddenly the sophistication of the conversation goes up two levels. :-)

You may have inadvertently given some of your holiday money to a couple of UK shop workers, but the vast amount of your spend for food in Majorca, drinks, accommodation, trips is ending up in Spanish pockets.
You really don’t understand, do you.
Just a Lesson in life for you Deskdiary , if you do not insult people , then you will not receive insults in return OK, It's that simple.
PS: For 'bracing' read 'effing freezing'.
I'm more than happy to have a difference of opinion (for Gulliver's benefit, this means a debate is happening but there's not an agreement), and in this instance Gromit, in my view, is totally and completely wrong, whereas he thinks (wrongly) that I'm wrong.

I can live with that - that's debate.
Surely you can understand that if you are giving money to an agent, and they spend most of that money in Spain, then you are stimulating the Spanish economy at the detriment of the UK economy.

Anybody seen Sophie's choice?

This is what Gromit wants travelers to do.
There is certainly a great deal of inherent illogicality in someone claiming that taking a holiday abroad is boosting the economy of the UK. Consider that the UK wants foreigners to travel there and see all the sights and spend their dollars or other currencies in order to boost the economy of the UK. DD is doing the exact opposite; he/she is going abroad to boost another country's economy.
Thanks for that, jd. I have a copy of that poster in my "railway room".

A few years back there was an item on the news about northern towns trying to compete with the "Costas" for holiday business. An interview was held on the seafront with the mayor of a coastal town - I think it was Skeggy, if not Bridlington. The mayor gesticulated across the town and the sea "Why would you want to put yourself through the Hell of an airport and a cramped fight? You've got everything here - sun, sea, sand, fine food and drink, wonderful accommodation!" As the camera switched off he was heard to say "And if you believe that load of old cobblers, you're dafter than you look!"
Also, bear in mind when deciding who may or may not be right(ish) in this argument, that Gromit said the lockdown in the NE was because they didn't vote Tory.

I know, that's mental right, but worth pointing out as a judgement of a flawed character.
I have long thought that G.B. as far as the tourist/leisure industry is conducted has been a bloody great rip off. You certainly take pot luvk with the weather.A return train ticket to Cornwall probably costs more than a return flight to Menorca. The food in this country is pretty dull and is probably why there are so many Indian/Chinese/Greek etc restaurants in this country. Bangers and Mash verses Paella and vino. No comparison. Our travel industry, imo, is a victim of its own greed and general indifference. I can wait,if necessary, to take my holidays elsewhere. Had too many washout holidays in a caravan as a kid.

Another thing. If I wish to take a motoring holiday in Europe during the season I have never seen a traffic cone or motorway lane closure. Our Highways Agency seem to take a sadistic delight in tearing up the roads right at the start of the summer season or the various rail networks decide to do track or signal maintenance.
