Those kids must really, really love school, Barry! I used to moan about having to walk 5 mins up the road to catch the school bus:-(
No I don't think it was irresponsible. Their parents made sure they were safely roped up. Very very safe, nobody could have made them safer;-)
that's the way I feel about those body baby carriers - does nobody think they can fall, last week a dad had his little baby strapped onto his front and the twin strapped onto his back, that I don't like either.
oh good god, another person joining the "I agree with TTT" brigade. I need a lie down
JJ...and a parent can also fall with a baby in their arms.

I'm surprised the social services weren't contacted. Or am i really ott?
I can't say I like it...but I'm not good with heights so that's a worst nightmare scenario for me. As others have said...parents are super experienced, and have built the kids up to this level.
I was more upset by the fact the kids were rewarded with sweets after...;)

Jj...body carriers are super padded. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone falling while carrying their baby.

Just a tad.
Yeah, the sweets are probably the high risk bit when linked to the concept of reward. Think it's amazing, remember the old days when people assessed risks and did stuff anyway.
This chap is a professional, he will have carried out a risk assessment, been aware of the children's capabilities, the weather, the route - every aspect of the climb.
There was no risk from third party intervention, unlike riding a bike or pony on the road; walking to school on their own; being a passenger in a car or bus.

Mountain climbing (when properly roped to experienced climbers) is almost certainly considerably SAFER for young children than playing on garden trampolines or on garden swings, both of which have alarmingly high accident rates (as indeed do bouncy castles).

Climbing techniques and equipment are advancing all the time. I can remember, in my youth, the BBC devoting many hours of broadcasting time to live coverage of the first ever ascent of The Old Man of Hoy by two vastly-experienced climbers. Two years ago an 8-year-old climbed it successfully and, I'm sure, in perfect safety:

If you want to see really risky activity with kids, just watch some of the vids posted on Facebook "comic fail" sites. On this one I agree with TTT.
What an experience for those children,a well organised and safely carried out climb.

Barry's post @ 10.23 is much more upsetting.
Properly organised & safely executed, a fabulous experience for the kids. I have to agree with Mamya, the pics in the 10:23 link give me greater concern.
Climbing is pretty safe by all accounts. It makes you wonder why all the climbers keep banging on about what a thrill and a challenge it is.
As a five year old I was often to be found on rooftops running along the ridge tiles, leaning against chimney breasts. The reason. My father used to do roofing work.
canary: "On this one I agree with TTT. " - gawd now I need a lie down!
