Motorways Cut To 60 Mph
Some sections of four motorways are going to be cut to 60 mph to reduce pollution - surely it would be better to cut it to 60 across the board rather than just in small sections. https:/ /www.bb c.co.uk /news/u k-engla nd-5413 0862

70 mph on the motorways and usually 30 mph in built up areas ( sometimes 20 mph in areas around schools ), sanmac. Although on 'Intelligent' stretches of motorway the overhead gantries tell you what the maxium speed is ie 20, 30, 40 ect is depending on whats happening ie accident, fog, roadworks ect.
Sometimes 20 mph in areas around any road the authorities think they fancy it. Best of all to keep switching from 30 to 20 to 30 to 20... because that allows a greater opportunity to fine drivers. Plus the added advantage of preventing reasonable progress to a destination. A major opportunity to make things worse in society. Oh the joy of getting into power and controlling the masses for one's own ego boost.

add to the “what’s happening” list, local authority meeting its emission targets - never mind the trials announced yesterday, the gantry signs on some motorways are already left switched on all day regardless of traffic conditions. regular areas for this are M1 woodhall services to the M18, and M42 from M6 to M40.

yes mush, in isolation going slower (up to a point) uses less energy overall and thus less pollution but that's not the only factor here. Longer time on the roads means more hold ups and longer times on the roads as a vicious circle. Then there is the overall effect of all that time lost etc. Variable speed limits on the M25 have shown some success at managing throughput, we should look into that more.
