historically Microsoft, like most tech companies have based their hiring choices on skills, why are they proposing to use a different demographic?

pixie, I don't know what your experiences are but in my sort of field white straight middle aged bloke is the most discriminated against person by a mile. We have initiatives for Black management, Advancing Women in management, advancing LGBT in management, diversity this diversity that, black appreciation this and that, wall to wall. Trying to rig things by anything other than ability helps no one. Sit a week in my firm and your eyes will be open.
It's nothing personal, or to do with personal experience... or even what I think or see. That is just how it is.
As nobody seems to have an answer... to either of my questions, I will be glad to see no further assertions of "box-ticking".
In fact, I never used to agree with "positive discrimination" myself. It was the attitudes on AB, that made me realise why it was still necessary.
If it helps you... in my field, white males are positively sought for. As they are a minority.

pixie; "It's nothing personal, or to do with personal experience... or even what I think or see. That is just how it is." - no it's not how it is, it's how the woke hordes have brainwashed you into thinking that's how it is.
"As nobody seems to have an answer... to either of my questions".
You questions have been answered you just don't like the answers
"In fact, I never used to agree with "positive discrimination" myself."
discrimination is never "positive"
"It was the attitudes on AB, that made me realise why it was still necessary. " - you mean we have tried to open your eyes and failed.
Question Author
pixie: "If it helps you... in my field, white males are positively sought for. As they are a minority. " - what is your field?
What percentage of those females are actually in the market for a job though Pixie as probably more women are at home looking after children?
Do you breed Bos Taurus, Pixie? ;-)
TTT, I used to agree with you... it's AB attitudes that have "brainwashed" me, if anything.

Neither of my questions have been answered, at all. Or even addressed.

You are quoting me about "positive discrimination " literally, until I saw the general attitudes here, and realised what the problem was.

My field is carework. And like nursing, nursery schools, preschools, infant schools... all are usually traditionally female and underpaid and under-maled...

Also, I don't care about PC or woke... common sense is better.

"Neither of my questions have been answered, at all. Or even addressed. " - what questions?

I see one unanswered question "Howe do we balance things" - why do we want to? why do you think we must have uniformity of ethnicity/gender across all positions?
It won't be uniformity... individuals never are. But there should be at least some equality. The other question was about how to achieve that (in the same post).
If you think we don't need equality, why?
Of course there will be some variation, but we are still nowhere near.... unless you believe that white males are genuinely more talented?
Microsoft is a US company, and the proposed changes to the make up of its higher management are at its Washington State Headquarters.

Obviously answers such as ‘you rarely saw a black person 50 years ago’ do not apply to the US. The country has 42 million People of African/American descent, so large firms (especially tech firm) that have never discovered any African/American talent, are not looking hard enough.
Question Author
the whole spectrum of jobs naturally have different ethnicity/gender that tend to do them. You work in care and wonder why there are very few middle aged white blokes doing it? Surely that's obvious? In my experience we don't even look at personal details in the first phase of sifting CVs. I do the tech interviews for Mainframe IT specialists in a major bank usually on the phone. I only know what sex they are when I talk to them. If they are good enough they get through. You cannot base your own determination of isms on statistics alone. It is unfair to those that got there on merit.
Everyone gets there on merit, TTT, providing they aren't excluded earlier. Tell me why mine is mostly female? Or yours is mostly male?
There will, of course, be some preference according to sex... but colour? And why is it still not proportionate?
I didn't say I wondered... I said they are positively sought for, btw. Is that wrong as well?
Question Author
pixie: "Tell me why mine is mostly female? Or yours is mostly male?" - mine is not mostly male, not mostly white. Care workers tend to get low wages, men tend to need more income than it can provide. err indoors used to recruit for a care company and 90% were femail non uk workers, often eastern bloc.
Tora,
I assume you are London based, and your interviewees are thereabouts. London has a huge population of black people, what % would you guess are black people successful in your own recruiting procedure ?

It won’t prove anything, but I am nosey.
Exactly.... and you are wondering why it tends to be white males who are in a position to recruit others?
I think anyone with half a brain cell can see that history....continues...
If we wait for a "natural" evolution, it could take decades. It has so far.
a lot of it's who you know, attitude and team player etc serious but jovial and of course credentials apptitude.

sunk: "I assume you are London based, and your interviewees are thereabouts. London has a huge population of black people, what % would you guess are black people successful in your own recruiting procedure ? " - no I am based on the south coast, most of the people I interview are from Europe, singapore, Malaysia or india, my department is approximately 75% non caucasian. I have interviewed 13 in the last 2 years, out of those 6 were hired, all non white, only one candidate white and he was not good enough.
