Do The Majority Of People Really Want A Stricter Lock Down?

I keep hearing on the news and reading articles in the papers (sorry no link) that when questioned a majority of people are in favour of even stricter lock down measures. Who are they asking? I don't know anyone in my quite wide circle of family and friends who are in favour, on the contrary, most of them think we have gone too far already. I can only conclude that they have been asking those whose financial security is guaranteed, by whatever means, no matter what.

I think people are totally fed up with Covid 19 and just want it dealt with by any means.

Don't really know but this tier thing in my opinion doesn't seem to be the answer. Each of the lower tiers just seem to be a resting place before they go up to the next tier.

I had the same thought.
I think a lot of it depends how you ask the question.
Many people probably vaguely support "tougher measures" but when they see what they actually are ...

two things....number one is that if less restrictive conditions are working in certain areas....and by working I mean that the R is reducing and the growth rate is reducing then why lock down?
Number two is that one way of getting the response that you want is to ask enough people until you have collected enough responses of the "right" answer.

We're being made to mark time while politicians of the world find a face-saving way of backing down from the end of the world they've erroneously presented us with.

They obviously hoped to ride to the rescue over a few weeks and it would all be over by now.

They now find themselves between a rock, the lockdown situations, and a hard place, curing viral stuff takes decades, so this simply cant be sustained which brings us back round to face saving.

The people questioned may well be relatives and friends all in on the game.

This was always going to happen
Initial lockdown, which is unsustainable over a long period.
Initial panic over, naturally it starts to spread again, because that is what viruses do.
Second time around it's messier: people are fed up, the reality of the economic hardship starts to bite, choices and therefore government gets harder for those countries in the thick of it

I think a lot of people don’t want a stricter lock down. I know I want things like dentists, chiropodists hairdressers etc. to stay open. I really feel the government need to target vulnerable people like me, as we are the ones who clog up the NHS if we get it.

My relatives and friends don’t want stricter lockdown measures. The view of most is that we have to do our own personal risk assessments and choose what is appropriate for each individual.

but one now forgotten theory was - covid is like sars ( mini sars if you like ) and THAT was eradicated by isolation of cases

It was one of the early shocky things for the great and good who govern us - that this did not happen against hope and expectation. Plan B of course was so bad it was almost unthinkable - the one we have

Maybe the survey is based on a larger sample than your circle of friends and family. We all like to fool ourselves into thinking that we have a wide circle, but, in practice, it pales into significance compared to the populations as a whole.

May be the ones that are calling for a lock down just got to enjoy not going to work, and getting paid. Regarding guarding the vulnerable I think the government failed on that score, and can't see them doing any better this time round.

Locking down isn't really dealing with it though is it. At best it would be dealing with a threatened overwhelming of resources by putting some some infections off until later: but we aren't in that position at present. Those new hospitals are still closed.

Sometimes it seems some pollsters seem to carefully select who they get opinions from.

They carefully select at random. It stands to reason that if you ask random people then you'll get a fairer reflection of what the population thinks. AB is a narrower selection of the population.

A separate point is that, yes, sometimes the way the question was phrased leads to a specific answer more often than not. Properly-designed surveys are meant to cut out such leading questions, but that's why it matters to check the source data and source material.

The only people I know who don’t object to stricter lockdown are those receiving a regular income. For those who have mortgages to pay and families to feed and businesses to maintain it's disastrous.
