On CNN they are taking about Joe Biden’s administration giving Trump and his cronies immunity from prosecution for their criminality over the last 4 years - let's hope not.
It appears to be a tradition among Presidents - even Nixon was pardoned for his appalling behavior, so chances are Trump will walk away with a clean slate.
it's not traditional at all. Nixon was a one-off (it was highly controversial at the time) and should remain that way.
People are asking whether Trump, who is still president pro tem, could pardon himself, or stand down temporarily while the vice president does it for him.
Trump can't pardon himself until/unless he's convicted. Same with any other pardon. Somebody has to have committed a crime, and been convicted of it, in order to be eligible for a pardon.
Perhaps if we imagine a scenario where Trump is done for, let's say, arson*, but wins a return to office in 2024, we could revisit the question then.
The Federal Government might have more important things to do instead of prosecute Trump. They won’t do it, so they won’t need to pardon him.
But his losing immunity holds him liable to prosecutions from non governmental organisations, individuals and companies. If he loses one of those cases, then the Federal Government will not want to interfere and undermine the law.
But in any case, Trump will soon be deemed too ill to face a court, and will evade justice.
jno,
You’ve not be paying enough attention for the last 4 years. His mental health has be questioned many times, but his personal doctor has given him the all clear. Same personal doctor will quite happily say he is mentally impaired as long as he still gets paid.
You keep on about this criminality, Hymie.
Could you cite one or two specific crimes.
Bear in mind, not being liked by you does not, I repeat, not constitute a criminal offence.
