It's like everything else, dave ... they do get special treatment, because they get to benefit from herd immunity because many other people have taken it. For Covid the herd immunity threshold (HIT) is estimated at 60-75%. But with only 90% effectiveness, if the HIT is 70%, about 80% of the population will need to take the vaccine.

The preliminary order of vaccine distribution in the UK was published by the Health Department in September:

1 older adults’ resident in a care home and care home workers
2 all those 80 years of age and over and health and social care workers
3 all those 75 years of age and over
4 all those 70 years of age and over
5 all those 65 years of age and over
6 high-risk adults under 65 years of age
7 moderate-risk adults under 65 years of age
8 all those 60 years of age and over
9 all those 55 years of age and over
10 all those 50 years of age and over
11 rest of the population (priority to be determined)

Ellipsis; is that Global population? If so, 80% of 7 billion = 5,600,000,000. Each treatment consists of two shots of the vaccine and, with only approx 1.3 billion available by end of 2021, the list of those receiving the treatment is going to be a very selective one.

It's whatever population. Herd immunity applies to "a population." I was talking about the UK population.

yo tote up all the people who have been vaccinated and see what befell them. you can even control for common fings - snotty noses by seeing who in the population gets on per month ( or time period)

and you can even estimate for rare occurrences

if you have vaccinated 10 000 people and there are no cases of paralysis - then the incidence of paralysis in that series must be less than 1 in 3000 ( 3/n ) where N is the number you have looked at

so please stop waving your hands and gawping
