jno - // it means "when did you stop beating your wife" //
I'm not sure that is a reliable comparison.
The phrase "When did you stop beating your wife?" is a famous example of a 'loaded question' - it's a question to which any answer will make the respondent look bad.
If you ask a Mt Smith, a politician, that question and he says "I have never beaten my wife!" - there is tomorrow's headline right there - why does Mr Smith feel the need to deny that he has ever beaten his wife, and it sows the seed in the minds of the readership that there is something to do with violence in his character.
That doesn't apply here - Mr Connery did have something violent in his character, and as the link provided shows, he was quite happy to repeat his 'reasoning' on television.
