What do you think, how long will it take to get back to ''normal'', when can we start jetting off to warmer climates, without restrictions, when will the pubs, clubs and hotels open their doors with ''normal'' hours, etc etc.

It is no doubt going to be a long winter for us Peter. We have all heard the latest good news regarding the latest vaccine. Despite one clown announcing it as Oxford second again, I prefer to think of it as Britain first again. It will take a bit of work to get the vaccine programme underway and the shots distributed but here in the UK we should be in the home straight by early spring. By Easter at least I would think. Our very own resurrection would be welcome. We must just this once put ourselves first though, before we save the World at our own expense, and I think that overseas travel will take a little longer to become second nature again.

As long as (some/many) people continue to flout the rules, the longer it will be. I’ve seen numerous such instances - with two people I know deliberately leaving false telephone numbers under the track and trace system.

Depends on so many factors many if not all depends upon public compliance and knowing the British public as I think i do based partly on AB discussions, I would guess July 2021 at the earliest.

We were chatting about this earlier, StP. "Normal" is interesting.
A vaccine is close (thanks Oxford and Sarah Gilbert!) but even when most are vaccinated and/or the virus dies out will it take us some time to behave normally?
When Kerry or Mayo play a big game we join friends and relatives in the pub to watch. It's crowded and jolly with lots of hugging. Never before have we thought that this could be dangerous as you hug a cousin when Kerry scores.
Little did we think last Christmas Eve that all the exchanges of good wishes and kissing under mistletoe would make many of us so ill. Early Covid? Who knows.
So when the world gets back to normal will we? Or will be be wary and cautious for a very, very long time?
Do you think that what we are going through now will have a long term effect on how we behave - and so our new normal will be different to the old normal?

One of my own sons said to me a few days ago that he would not have the vaccine, I was shocked and asked him why, his excuse was that he didn't want the Government telling him what to do, my son is 49 years old, quite intelligent, has his own successful business, as I said, I was shocked.
I then pointed out to him that the vaccine was not for him, but to protect me, his mother, his two children, plus his granddaughter from Covid ........ it didn't take him long to change his mind!

StP, that sounds a little like my neighbour. She's not going to have the flu jab as she's never had flu!? No doubt she won't have the Covid vaccine when available as she's never had Covid.

No doubt the selfish people will make themselves known as ever, usually with a show of smugness. Why would anyone have a vaccine? As long as everybody else does they are alright innit. Like the ones who insist that everybody else's kids get the triple vaccine as long as their kids don't.

So most of us will be vaccinated, but what about all those that are here illegally and are under the radar?? We will never be rid of covid.

I don't think that 'normal' should come back. It's actually not 'normal' at all; it's a brand new way of self-indulgence which we have all got used to and think that we can continue on that route, regardless of the consequences. Greta and co are right; we have to rethink the way we treat spaceship earth and our fellow passengers.

We've done okay with polio, diphtheria and other things we have vaccines for, Sharon so I don't see why this should be any different...well I hope so.

Indeed, Atheist. But for those of us who have rethought the way we live and are doing something about it our normal wouldn't be bad...or at least the very best we can make it for the planet.

Glad your son changed his mind, StP. Despite having a mother who died from Covid and another relative positive I have a sister who denies it exists and no doubt won't be having the vaccine. Still, every family has a bonkers one and while we have her it's not me... :-)

Long after vaccines are universally available and covid is beat, we will be living with the after effects of this year for many years.

Many tens of thousands have lost their jobs. Many tens of thousands have gone into debt. Many companies have closed. Many have massively downsized to survive. Lots of long term illnesses have been neglected and people have become more sick.

It is a good sign that the fightback has begun, but victory is several years off.
