I read of a conversation between photographer, David Bailey (82) & Spanish fashion designer and founder of the eponymous high-end shoe brand, Manolo Blahnik (78), it goes;

' Blahnik: So sometimes I just have to sit down and say: 'God, did all this happen?' All the excitement, it doesn't exist anymore, maybe because I'm old.

Bailey: It's not because you're old. It doesn't exist. '

Perhaps you have to be of a certain age to know what they were talking about, but looking around at the status quo, I do, - do you?

yeah we 'ad to lick t'road clean wi' ooor tongues
Yes. I was teenager in London in the 60’s and it was exciting and different, mainly because of what had been around before. It was a unique time full of iconic fashion and music.
Nostagia just isn't what it used to be ...
"yeah we 'ad to lick t'road clean wi' ooor tongues "

At least you had tongues. We had to make do with pieces of cardboard our dad nailed to the roofs of our mouths
God I wish I had said that !

and you listen to all the head shaking and cries of gobbledeegook ( thx Naomi) and "what dat all mean?" (thx rest of the ABers)

and laugh your head off
//[60s] It was a unique time full of iconic fashion and music.//

yeah but no but

everyone recognised it whether or not they approved ( my parents did NOT ! )[ er approve]

Old People had heard of the Beatles ( whether or not they called them the Bay-attles) - the judge who asked " what are the beatles ?" was not saluted as old wise and immutable but
stupid, out of touch and ignorant.

Can you imagine the archbish of canterbury - Marcus Welby DD asking .... er .... AJ Tracey, Jorja Smith, Freya Ridings, Tom Walker, what they thought of the world ?
or even having heard of them?
Don't know about Marcus Welby (that takes me back) but Justin Welby is a fan of Stormzy.

The Yorkshire men sketch is hilarious, but I don't see how it fits into this narrative, in fact it seems to be a reversal; I'm not saying things were worse, I'm saying they were (but I may be deluded) better. Certainly at that time, there was something in the air, things seemed to be changing, & lots of people loved it.

When the 'woke' generation looks back to today in say 50 years time what will they have to look at?
i know what they mean. The Richest kids of all time monetarily are the poorest in what's been done to them. Most are neurotic before they are 10 about things that i didn't even realise where things. They are violated by trendy attitudes before they've even lost their milk teeth, they spend every waking moment the puppets of a few web sites on devices that are the invention of satan himself. Yes I know exactly what they mean.
When was this brief Golden Age?
Dates?
Many of today’s young have had their futures plundered by older generations. House prices are on average much much much higher than average early career earnings than they were in the past. Many of the older generations who pat themselves on the back for thriftily saving for a house when it was relatively easy to do so simply refuse to understand this but owning a home is a basis of security and independence that is realistically out of reach for average young people. The bill for the credit crunch and 2008 crisis, the costs of Brexit and the covid recession too will all fall primarily on the young. It is easy to sneer at “wokeness” but the truth is the young have been let down by previous generations who are largely fat and happy.
Young people 50 years ago had more opportunity... state funded university places if you were good enough, easy to find work and support yourself on what you earned if you didn’t go, as most didn’t... if you didn’t like your job it wasn’t that hard to find another one, lots of social mobility and not really that hard to save for a house on an average salary. Of course 50 years ago there were many problems with unions and power cuts etc but society was also far less dependent on electricity than it is now. To many young people the past enjoyed and abolished by their parents sounds like a land of opportunity compared to the country they live in now rose tinted specs perhaps but I think there is something to it.
I reluctantly find myself agreeing with roy... at 17:21.
Models, photography, fashion glamour ? Is that what is being referred to ? They still exist but society isn't as obsessed with them anymore. It was a fashion/fad of it's time. Celebs seem to capture some folk's interest still, but there again, these days everyone seems to be a celeb. Especially if you own a website and update it regularly.
OG. "Models, photography, fashion glamour".
Surely these things are just as current today as in the sixties? One difference is that the young people do it themselves with their portable telephonic devices.
Aging population too... i forgot to mention that another thing today’s young will foot the bill for. Meanwhile many of the people who left them with this continue to deny or ignore climate change (it won’t affect them it will affect the young) or sneer at them for being “woke”. It’s not surprising they have the hump compared to the young of 50 years ago
No, not at all. The sixties were a time when the major celebs were involved with them.
I seem to recall more Ratners than crown jewels for the vast majority in the gold of that golden age.

All a bit shabby and the shine wore off quickly.
Og, young people today seem just as pressured by celebrities, you just don't see them they are on social networks, and have huge cult status and massive following. It's worse in a way because it doesn't seem important to us but for so many it's their world. A world lived electronically where they would rather believe what they hear on WhatsApp than from teachers, where everything will be wonderful if you have a certain look, and buy certain things and treat those who are not like you with disdain. A world where cyber bullying drives children to depression and suicide. We need to engage with this world and quickly or how can we offer protection and support.
