does that mean that more people are getting tested or that even more people are becoming ill or both?

More people are being tested and the results are coming back much quicker. It took 45 minutes from me being tested to getting the result.

The cause of the increase is almost certainly the far high virulence of the new strain of Covid-19, which is causing the R number to rise quickly.

The lower figure is tests and higher is total deaths.
