This is surely a time of national emergency - why the hell doesn't the Government completely override all the bureaucracy involved (20 forms and signatures including deradicalisation of all things) and get them up and running, perhaps supported by ex nurses, pharmacies and possibly the military......28000 of them waiting.... I understand Boris has said bowlocks to the admin and Halfcock has gone off halfcock at some of it - but surely any delay is just risking more doom.

Think 20k ex-doctors (like Sqad) out there, 40 patients a day, and you're talking a 800k a day, say 5 days a week and 4 million per week, 30 odd million by the end of Feb. This would leave current doctors free for carehome vaccinations and supporting patients with other complaints/illnesses.

On top of this, there are vets - a friend of my sister's is one and he's volunteered and been rejected - as he says 'I can bloody well put a needle into an animal and do far more per day than the average doctor. And I more than know my muscle structures - I'm just sticking a needle in not diagnosing AIDS, drooping sex organs, or some berk who has over done it on the vinegar.'

Coincidentally, there ar 28k+ vets in the UK in 4000 outlets that could be coopted......in short , given the vaccine availability, the Government could easily hit 1 million a day jabs. - 3 months and the UK is at level 1, another 3 months and we would all be double-jabbed.

But then this is the Government (and it wouldn't matter who is in power - Starmer's lot would probably make an even bigger balls up of it.). I put it down to arrse covering and insurance.

Regardless of the many disputed facts on here there is no doubt that the recruitment of vaccinators (not ex-doctors acting as supervisors) is unnecessarily bureaucratic. There is ample evidence (albeit some of it anecdotal)that the process is not very slick. The government is aiming to vaccinate two million people each week. If it wants to do that it needs to farm out the process to people who can get things done. Even if the former doctors are applying for paid supervisory roles, can anybody tell me why they need to be up to date with the latest "anti-radicalisation" and "diversity" thinking? The civil service has no flexibility and uses no discretion to match the circumstances. That's why it should not have been let anywhere near the programme.
because it's what all employees of the NHS have to do, in order to be covered by the trust's insurance
as far as I can see, staffing is not (as yet) likely to be the limiting factor, more likely the actual vaccinations

then the government should underwrite the insurance....
DT. You ruined a reasonable post by having a pop at keir starter. Senseless .
By the time they have finished dilly dalling about they will be 100k dead,. This government couldn't deliver a lorry load of spuds to a chip shop without getting into a mash.

I could have had a pop at Ms. Sturgeon.... be thankful for small mercies.
Question Author
teacake, that's my point about Government at large - and the Labour party would probably be just as bad, if not worse, given their past record of inaction and overspend when in power.
lol they do - who do you think pays for the NHS??
Question Author
Also, as indicated by others, this smacks of a very soggy and stodgy civil service...never an organisation renowned for its acceptance of change management.
sorry, reading again you said "underwritten"
does it? The overall control is (I suppose) with the civil service? but NHS is not the civil service
Question Author
nae probs, bedknobs....
Haven't read all the responses but I would be concerned that they had received appropriate training in treating adverse reactions, anaphylactic shock etc.
Question Author
well they are part of a triangle....a close mate of mine's son was the focal point in KPMG for establishing the accounting systems for Nightingale and dealing with the NHS was, apparently, a doddle in comparison to the civil service supporting Health (as to the channel to extra funding etc etc).
Bear this in mind, thousands of companies offered to make PPE in this country, ( they were ignored) We now have thousands of chemists offering to do vaccines, so far their being ignored?? Are we again looking for a private company that has links, yet again?
It looks suspicious teacake, more of Johnsons cronies grabbing a few mill for failure no doubt.

The Government are a total shower of unpleasantness.
And in my opinion they should be vaccinating Saturday & Sunday until everyone is done!!
It is possible with shift work & rotas.
Maturity has escaped you DT . Hey ho .
//...but I would be concerned that they had received appropriate training in treating adverse reactions, anaphylactic shock etc.//

Agreed. It's necessary for the job (though I imagine there are not too many retired doctors who had not already been trained in those topics).

This is an emergency. We're constantly told that lives are at risk so administering vaccinations will save lives. In May 1940 about 400,000 lives were at risk in northern France. Vice-Admiral Ramsay organised the evacuation of Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk. Large numbers of private craft of all shapes and sizes heeded the call to assist. Nobody asked whether the owner had his Masters' Certificate up to date; nobody checked the vessels to see they were seaworthy; nobody checked that insurance was in place to cover the boats. They just got on and did it and a third of a million troops were rescued in eight days.

If this happened today the civil servants in the Admiralty would be discussing, over tea and bikkies, whether the vessels that had volunteered their services were compliant with the latest environmental standards and whether their owners had been trained in Equality and Diversity. Meanwhile the troops on the beaches in Dunkirk would have been either taken prisoner or (more likely) simply cut down.

This is a similar emergency. I'm sorry but to suggest that the volunteers need training in "Recognising Radicalisation" or their insurance will be invalid is just about as daft as it gets.
