' Donald Trump has stumbled and fallen, and the establishment is not going to let slip this last opportunity to stomp him and his movement to death.

On Sunday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a startling ultimatum:

Either Vice President Mike Pence and the Trump Cabinet invoke the 25th Amendment, declare the president “unfit” for office, and remove him within 24 hours, or House Democrats will vote to impeach him again.

As the Senate, which would have to hear the case and hold the trial, does not meet again until Jan. 19, the day before Joe Biden is inaugurated, what is going on here? It sounds absurd, like rushing to hang a man who is going to die the next day.

But such is the blind hatred of Pelosi’s House for Donald Trump.

“House Democrats want veto power over whom Republicans can nominate.”
Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina suggests holding off sending a bill of impeachment to the Senate for 100 days, to give Biden a chance to get his appointees confirmed, and then indict and convict Trump of sedition when he is a private citizen.

What would be the purpose of impeaching a president who hasn’t been president for three months?
Answer: A conviction would strip Republicans of the right to reelect the man who got the largest number of votes in their party’s history.

House Democrats want veto power over whom Republicans can nominate. And this is the crowd that does not cease to bray about its devotion to “democracy.”.............'

Trump is a nutter and has to go. As for Buchanon, didn't do very well on his bids for the presidency and hugely tainted by his association with Nixon.
No.
Pelosi, like our last Speaker, is drunk on power. She'd be better advised to listen to Joe Biden, calm down, and concentrate on uniting the country rather than stoking division.
What better way to unite the country than by putting someone who incited a riot and tried to overturn the result of an election in his favour on trial for sedition?

What worse way to unite the country than by trying to ignore it?
Who has spoken of killing Trump?
Khandro: "Exploiting The Capitol Riot To Kill Trump."
Isn't that a fake news headline? A bit misleading, surely? Or just poetic licence on your part?
I think the reading of the situation would be different if The UK government were to pursue a criminal over here. The headline might then read "Exploiting The Law To Kill accused person", and you'd surely agree that it would be misleading.
Your argument makes no sense, Jim. Biden is calling for a period of calm. More Trump-bashing won't unite anyone and will actually give him more publicity. Time to move on.
"A period of calm" is possible at the same time as prosecuting someone for criminal acts. There's no contradiction between these two, and pretending there is is to tolerate domestic terrorism.

The purpose of Impeachment is also to ensure that Trump is never let near a political office again.
Spungle, I wonder if you could perhaps summarise the case for pursuing Trump?
Biden is right- now is the opportunity to move on from Trump and concentrate on what unites rather than what divides the nation. I don't understand your question, Atheist. Democrats with their political manouverings will do what they wish; but impeaching an ex-President is pointless and will not work towards healing the division.
Atheist: Only by pursuing legal options to hammer Trump do they stop him from running again.
Painting it as Republican vs Democrat is wrong. It should be painted as Republican and Democrat vs anarchy.
Why shouldn't Trump run again? He's a democratically elected President, and the US is a democracy. Let the people decide.
kahndro, who said your first quote?
Ellipsis is right- now is the time to unite against anarchy, from the far right and far left. Politicising it achieves nothing for the people.
Spungle, my question was aimed at encouraging you to think about the issue. I wasn't trying to make you admit something with which you disagreed. I think I can understand your view; you want to move on perhaps because you think that it would do no good to pursue the matter, maybe cause ill-feeling?
The question of him running again is purely academic. He would have to do so as an independent and would have no chance of success. Far better just to deny him the 'oxygen of publicity'. Facebook and Twitter have already made a start.
Thanks Atheist- yes- impeaching Trump (again) only gives him more publicity, does not remove him from power (The election did that) and whatever the outcome would be seen purely as a divisive, political act of bitterness. Biden is right to seek a period of calm and get the country to unite on American values. The time for prosecuting Trump will surely come- but the impeachment would be counter-productive now and only encourage the anarchists even more.

Why shouldn't he brought to justice if he broke the law? If a President incites insurrection against the country's democratic institutions, should he be "let off" simply because the timing is awkward?
