Khandro - the vile abuses were carried out by people in Holy Orders and wearing habits and dog-collars - they were then stoutly denied for many years by a church which knew exactly what was being done and spent many years and millions of euros in obfuscation and outright lies to prevent the truth emerging.
They were not 'historical' they were in our lifetime - in fact they continued in the last decade of the 20th Century (if not later) - and the Roman Catholic Church establishment from Pope to novitiate was complicit in both the committing of the atrocities and the subsequent denial that they happened.
The State needs to apologise as it not only funded the institutions where the abuse occurred, but also spent many years assisting the Church in hiding the truth.

All this true, I am not for one minute defending what you call the "church" & vile members of it, of whom I don't care what they were wearing or what titles they held, I am defending the real Roman Catholic religion & Christianity itself, which can not be dismissed in its entirety because of some wicked people who have adhered to it.

" - condoned by cover up and the fear of lack of approval from the outset. The religion created and incubated the conditions for these and other atrocities, the countless acts of depravity, sexual assault and paedophilia, all covered up from the pope to the lowliest nunn. How you can try to defend this barbarism is beyond me.
Then you need to look at the history of Christianity and Catholicism, Khandro.

Missed you there, TTT. I don't know how anyone defends it either. It just sickens me that there is any support at all but thankfully that support is waning.
It's gladdened me since returning home to see so many of my family turning away...and not just the young generation. Cousins of my age have seen the light.

it's like joining a social club and enjoying it, upstairs, having drinks and playing games, outings, fun. One day you discover there is a section of the committee that have a depraved hobby they carry out in the basement. Do you carry on paying subs and joining in the club's activities because you liked the bit you saw initially? I don't think so.
As I may have mentioned before, my eyes were opened to the appalling attitudes of the Catholic Church in two instances -
One was visiting my mother-in-law's tiny cottage where she grew up as one of seven children, and told how she walked two miles each way to school with no shoes on, and ate turnips from the field on the way home - and the seeing the obscenity of the massive parochial house in the town which was home to four priests, who still demanded collection from these families every Sunday.
The second time was visiting the Vatican - anyone who has been there sees a fraction of the obscene wealth the church has collected and hoarded over centuries.
All in the name of God, of course.
