The highest death rates in the world, according to worldometers, are
in Gibraltar, San Marino, Belgium, Slovenia, and the UK, in that order. It is unreasonable to include the first two of these at least, because they have the population of small towns and the total deaths in each are 70 and 65 respectively. Belgium's Covid-19 count has, I believe, always been based on probable rather than just confirmed cases, so is potentially slightly inflated, but there is no doubt that Belgium is per capita among the worst-hit nations; but, regardless, that makes comparison with Belgium tricky as it isn't a true like-for-like.
The most troubling aspect is that, for the time being at least, the number of new announced Covid-19 deaths in the UK per head is vastly outstripping both countries, and at present rates we can expect to surpass both Slovenia's and Belgium's death rate by the end of February.
