Can someone please explain what is happening with regard these imports.
I thought Brexit would free us to trade with the rest of the world. In practice it seems the Government is using the opportunity make loads of money for mr Rishi.
Presumably all this extra cost will be made up by higher prices for the consumer.

I hope we're not going to find exorbitant tariffs on the jam we've been promised, albeit tomorrow.

that's surprising. There seem to be lots of annoying little cases springing up thatappearm to be down to lack of clarity, or some careful fudging

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/jan/23/cheshire-cheesemaker-says-business-left-with-250000-brexit-hole

but this is the first one I've seen that's in complete conflict with an explicit government assurance.
My guess is like much of the legislation changes all brought in at once, certain details may not be clear. Probably needs priority clarification.

Perhaps the EU had a trade deal with African farmers but none similar has been agreed/set up with the UK yet ?

// Ministers are under pressure to explain why the levies are being charged, despite an announcement that a last-gasp deal was struck between the UK and Ghana on New Year’s Eve. //

We have a deal. But not as good as the previous one apparently.
He says he had hoped to take part in the “sunny uplands” promised by the government post-Brexit but failed to check what he needed to do to benefit from the change, and as a result of this management drop off has temporarily seen the viability of his online retail come to a “dead stop”. Instead of sorting his error he has now chosen to move future investment from the UK to the EU instead.
maybe Ghanaians are still producing straight bananas, only to find they're now banned here.
Last-gasp deals are likely to be rushed and flawed. Needs revisiting.
he didn't fail to check, OG. He asked and wasn't told

/// Spurrell explained that he thought he was fully prepared for Brexit and had consulted with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the National Farmers’ Union along the way.

He knew he would need customs declarations and health certificates signed off by vets to get his cheese into the EU after 1 January, and has successfully been getting pallets of the product across the Channel to wholesale customers.

But what he had not anticipated was the requirement for health certificates to accompany online orders from private customers.

“It’s as if someone forgot to negotiate this part of the deal, they forgot that there needed to be an exemption or allowance for the direct consumer sales.///
you were deceived by brexit propaganda from the likes of TTT and the usual suspects
durr - - we did say, you know

Nowt to explain. They are working on a deal to remove the tariffs.
it seems in fact that they are still doing as advised, as companies are now being told by the government to set up businesses in the EU

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/jan/23/brexit-hit-firms-advised-government-officials-set-up-shop-in-eu

I don't recall that advice being offered before Brexit but mayhap I missed something.

The UK and Ghana completed a post Brexit deal on New Years Eve. Yet the UK Gov are still levying huge tariffs on these banana importers. Why?
Because they are 'still' working on a deal to remove the tariffs.

// they are 'still' working on a deal to remove the tariffs. //
So they didn’t have a deal on News Years Eve, they had a blank piece of paper that they both signed, then they were going to make it up after that?

Meanwhile UK businesses and consumers are suffering. What a bunch of amateurs.
Bought some bananas today. No suffering involved.
The bananas I bought this week haven't gone up in price. Since we don't buy bananas from the EU I'm a bit baffled. I suppose a new deal needs negotiating.
Sunk, are you bothered about the Ghanaian banana industry or just having a go at the government?

> Since we don't buy bananas from the EU I'm a bit baffled.

Really?
