Now The Police Finally Find People Who Won't Be Nasty To Them...

They close down a church service in South London (Covid). Knew we Catholics would get their ridiculous attention sooner or later. Hardly a marauding mob. Good to know, however, that they felt sufficiently safe to leave the station.

The latest UK Government guidance for churches in Enland explains that,
'“Should”
Where the guidance that an activity should or should not take place this is not a legal requirement under law. However, it is strongly advised that consideration is given to following the advice being given to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19.'
The guidance states,
'Limits for communal worship should be decided on the basis of the capacity of the place of worship following an assessment of risk.'
It is clear from that, there is no legal limit on communal worship in England and that a risk assessment is not a legal requirement.
It would be interesting to know on what basis the police decided there were too many folk in the church.
Did they ask each of those without face coverings if they had a reasonable excuse for not wearing one?
It would not be the first time the police have acted outwith their legal powers regarding COVID-19 legislation.

// but why do you think that a praying mob is safer than a marauding mob?//
mob rule in a roman church? I really dont think so
God you godless lot ! Mass protest - keep to the facts please. Following crucifixion and Christ going to harrow hell
there is no Mass until the midnight mass on Easter Sunday. The news said correctly, Good Friday Service.
I was however shocked to see someone genuflecting in the news clip. Sorry Christ not in today. no genuflection until midnight mass ....the tabernacle is shown with the door open ( christ not in) and the little red oil lamp is extinguished ( presence not er present)
No bells - a rattle is used - and notice there was a cross and not a crucifix displayed.
I am shocked - I am truly shocked.

It was unlikely that the police were sitting outside counting the number of people going into the church. There are a lot of residential buildings close to that particular church, and knowing how many people would have been going to the Good Friday servce there, it's more likely that someone living there reported that they had seen a lot of people going to the service, which was what triggered the visit from the police.

And how would that help, exactly, bearing in mind that the legislation places no direct limit on the numbers allowed to attend for communal worship?
Whilst it's only a guess, it could be that the local residents don't like worshipers parking outside their houses. They may have taken the opportunity to put the boot in by calling plod who obligingly pops round and stands up by the altar to announce something totally at odds with the legislation. Only a guess, though.

the study of bits of a church and what they are used for is called ecclesiology
chapter on roman churches is kinda thin: after athanasius 500, nothing really changes until trent 1555 and then 1962 Vatican II
