//Sounds like you are supporting making people have to pay hundreds of pounds to be able to vote. That is clearly wrong.//
Aheem ... Postal Vote. Make every postal vote secure by either arranging collection from the address on the application, or to be sent via the postal service(it is freepost paid). No deliveries to polling stations during the vote. They do you know. Postal Votes are asked for and then "delivered" to polling stations, sometimes multiple postal votes by one person. Ban that.
Labour wanted to introduce ID Cards but actually consulted and the feedback was negative. So even though they could have imposed them, they instead decided to scrap the idea.
I suspect the present Government will eventually backtrack on the idea. The last thing they want to do is prevent those in the North East From voting Tory.
//Seems fine to me, wasnt it Blunket (Labour) who wanted them 10 years or so ago?//
Think about it. Blunkett was in favour of I.D. cards ... the least able of them to make a judgement on their efficacy was the only one who understood their advantages. Labour in a nutshell.
Togo,
Don’t be silly. Blunkett didn’t proceed with cards because at the time there was a backlash against them, and their introduction was deemed too expensive.
If Labour had borrowed £400 Billion, then anything would have been possible.
YMB,
The world financial crisis of 2008 was a bit of an event. Banks having to be saved, councils having to be bailed out, and quantitative easing at full pelt.
Labour bought assets that could later be sold so the damaged was a bit limited. If they had splashed huge sums to their chums for products and services that often didn’t even work, then yes the country would have been screwed.
I was having a small panic about providing photo I.D. over here - a lot is in my maiden name, which was my legal name in France - but then I thought of my now-much-loved bus pass!
I have absolutely no objection to proving identity to vote, which is an important right, but surely it doesn't have to be photographic? If I didn't have a bus pass I would be stymied. I could provide proof of name, registration to vote and residence - shouldn't that be enough?
Jackdaw - your voting papers arrive in your house in your name. So, perhaps we will need to provide proof of address? That is straightforward - the papers have been sent there. More complicated than I thought!
It might be good to have one card that carries all the information save all the bits of plastic in my purse. I think lockdown is getting to some of us we need to return to nursery.
Trump tried to stifle poor people voting in the US in various ways. Sad to see the Tories trying the same trick. It could backfire like it did in the US. Tell people that they cannot vote unless they they overcome obstacles put in their way, and it will make them more determined to vote.
The turnout in many areas last Thursday was 25%. We should be looking at ways to get more people voting, not making it harder for them to cast their vote.
apathy is at the heart of not voting. Even some on here said they didn't need to vote because it was only for their Police Commissioner.
people gave lives to get the vote lets not forget that, and one should do so.
