\\“But why are the female birds always shown as a smaller picture insert? #sexisminbirding? We need a revolution.”//

Sexism?

\\One said: “Completely agree. Also, can we do away with the habit of describing (for example) a male blackbird as a “blackbird” while the female is always “a female blackbird”.//

thats because male blackbirds are obvious whereas female blackbirds could be a thrush.

too much to grapple with at this time of day.
Cock-a-doodle don't
Now I read the article I see that she's a doctor like Clarkson's a doctor.

Less impressed suddenly. :-)
What are they going to call the tits?
(Tyts in case of asterisks.)

Haha. That is treatable mind.
She’s called ‘ birdgirl.
I can't describe it as sexism, however even though in the majority of cases, female birds are smaller than males ,the illustrations would be easier to distinguish if they were in proportion.
At least the comments below the article are sensible.
People confuse me!

I would have looked at the bird guide to see which was a Gull and which ones were Eagles. Checking the gender balance would never have entered my mind.
Identifying female birds is easy - you find and identify the male and the bird 5 hops behind is the female... simples.

danny - are you male or female owl?
Would it also be better to say Robin/Robyn?

And how you even get away with saying Blackbird these days is beyond me, surely BAMEbird or Bird of Colour would be more appropriate?
Whilst I agree that Maya-Rose has been silly in her choice of words, strange that no one else can understand that illustrations in proportion would be easier to see.

Or is this just a vehicle to have a pop?
You should form a tag team with another ABer Spungle, who thinks that maybe we shouldn't say Black & White photographs.

Oh how we didn't laugh.
