How would he get a job in a children's hospital? Unless he had unspent previous convictions, there would be nothing to stop him. Plus of course checks back then were nowhere near as tight as they are now.

You have to take into account that your average child abuser works on the ability to get people to trust him or her. They are very good at hiding their proclivities and very good at covering their tracks. They make your average confidence trickster look like a rank amateur. This is how they get away with it for so long.

How did a child abuser spend many years in the employ of the BBC and working at a hospital? Because he persuaded most people he was a nice bloke who was to be trusted.
