> Yulia Yakubovich got a two-year suspended sentence in Minsk for blocking traffic to make a political point. She denied that, saying the traffic had stopped at a red light.

Yeah but ... she stood under the red light wearing a white coat.
Indeed Russia and Belarus sound like paradise for tories... protests not allowed, limited opposition, low taxes, no liberal media, no pesky environmental politics, lots of nationalism, conscription, death penalty... LOVELY!
Belarus may still have the death penalty but Russia does not.
Oops, didn't know that jack thanks
Untitled, we have a free press, unlike many countries, liberal attitudes to gays, transgenders, gay marriage is legal, protest by every known group under the sun, Green policies that are reaping rewards, at least for lots of people, love of one's country, if that's patriotism so be it. we have a first class armed services, no conscription, unlike many countries, and two brand new aircraft carriers heading for the open seas as we speak. whats not to like.
untitled you must be living in another country if you think we are like Belarus or Russia.
I don't think we are like Russia or Belarus.
" Indeed Russia and Belarus sound like paradise for tories."

now why would you put that, the Tories aren't for any of the things you listed
and we abolished the death penalty way back when.
"we have a free press, unlike many countries, liberal attitudes to gays, transgenders, gay marriage is legal, protest by every known group under the sun, Green policies that are reaping rewards, "

just about all of these things are the constant subject of moaning by tories... plenty of tories favour the death penalty and recently on answerbank tories were arguing for protests to be made illegal
A Belarusian joke for y'all....

A guy is walking down the street in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, very close to the protests when suddenly a police car full of cops pulls up. The cops jump out of the car and start beating up the guy - Minneapolis-style.

The poor guy then yells: "No, please, stop! I voted for Lukashenko!"

One of the cops then responds: "Shut up, liar! No one voted for Lukashenko!"
Another that is apropos....

Customs agent: Welcome to Belarus!
Customs agent: Are you here for business or tourism?

Russian: Business

Customs agent: Occupation?

Russian: Yes
not illegal, but confess that one or two protests every week here in the capital can be wearisome. They do disrupt peoples lives, and often are nowt to do with the UK. Like the recent Palestinian one, what's that got to do with Britain.
yes there are times i wished we had the death penalty, but my head says no, whereas my heart when it reads stories of the recent paedophile who has molested hundreds or possibly thousands of boys says yes. This individual got life, but must serve a minimum of 18 years. not nearly enough he should have got life, with no parole.
He must serve 18 years before he can be CONSIDERED for parole. There is no guarantee that he will get it.
i know that, but if he gets out at all will be a travesty for all the children he abused.
Russia still has the death penalty on statute as a matter of fact. However it was suspended to enable the country to join the Council of Europe.
Russia doesn't use the death penalty? Don't make me laugh, the other leg has bullet-marks on it.
