//In an Ofsted survey, girls explained that if they blocked boys on social media "they just create multiple accounts to harass you".// I'm obviously missing something here. If I went somewhere where I was being continually bullied or harassed I simply wouldn't go there. The answer to this problem is in the girls' hands. Simply avoid using Twitter or...

//No, it isn't, nj. I can't believe you say the victims should go, and the bullies should stay.//
//NJ, in your example, why should the innocent party have to make the change rather than the guilty parties be prosecuted?//
It is patently obvious that the bullies are not going to be controlled. People have to deal with life as it is, not as they'd like it to be. In my analogy, if the bullies were not able to be brought under control and I knew it, my sanity would have to be suspect if I continued to go down Rosaman Street. Young girls do not have to use social media and if they are suffering stress or bullying or whatever by doing so they really need to take a step back and wonder whether they are simply bringing the problems on to themselves.
I'm not defending the perpetrators of this nonsense. I'm suggesting a pragmatic way to deal with what is clearly a problem for some because it's not going to be tackled any other way.

I am not victim blaming but I am another Social media user who doesn't get any of this nonsense. Yes I agree that the harassers should be taught boundaries ands have those boundaries enforced but its entirely possible to lock down accounts on FB to whoever you want. I have to say the TV ad for parents about understanding the internet shocks me that it is thought neccessary and true to life.
//NJ "whether they are simply bringing the problems on to themselves. " so not victim blaming then?//
So let's say "exacerbating" the problem, then. They didn't bring it on themselves but they could put an end to it if they choose to. But they don't.
//Believe it or not, some females like social media.//
What, they like being bullied and harassed? Because it seems to me that is part and parcel of using these facilities. I'm sorry but I won't be swayed on this. People, including young people, have a responsibility to look after their wellbeing. They know they are going to suffer abuse but they continue to use the platforms. It's like returning day after day to bang your head against a wall, then complaining that the wall doesn't move out of the way when you hit it. To deliberately and continually do something that you know is going to cause you grief is, plainly and simply, lunacy.
I'm not saying the abuse is acceptable. Far from it. But it is endemic and it will not be stopped any time soon. As I said in my earlier answer, we have to deal with life as it is, not as we'd like it to be. The way to deal with this particular problem involves a thing called an "off" switch.

Because for the AB average age demographic we’re older, more experienced generations.
Today’s kids are seeing this as normal.
So much so that “normal” sex and pornography is called “vanilla” and is labelled boring.
The internet and by association social media can be a fantastic thing … but it is also responsible for a lot of ill and evil (in the wrong hands)
In “my day” (47yo) coercion, sexual exploitation etc did take place but when it did it was not “saved for entirety “ on the internet
For eg I recall (yup with fondness lol) making sexual home videos with a boyfriend but all I needed to do when the relationship ended was rip up the video tape.
Now these pics n vids are stored on the internet forever

This scenario is regularly argued on AB, depending on the current news story.
Personally, I'm on the side of the victims, always. If every time you walk down a certain street someone throws a brick at you, yes, you could solve that easily by taking a different (longer) route.
I'd much rather see the scumbag throwing the brick stopped from doing it.

Quite amazing how so many dont seem to understand what NJ is saying.
In an ideal world yes the perpetrators could be stopped, but we live in the real world and they cant so what is wrong with sayin you should protect yourself?
Or perhaps those who live in eutopia in their head could suggest ways of stopping 'boys will be boys'?
And BTW, In have girls and sometimes they can be just as bad. One of daughters was a right wild child and the way she treated boys and men was appalling.

//Excellent message to send to our young people - if something is not right, just ignore it - take a different path.//
No.
The message is: "This abuse/bullying/harassment that you are suffering is unlikely to be stopped in the near future." (i.e. a statement of how things are in the real world in which you live).
"If you want to take steps to prevent this abuse/bullying.harassment the best thing you can do is to avoid using the platforms where you are suffering this treatment." (i.e. advice on how to protect your wellbeing which is as much your own responsibility as it is anybody else's).
