The nature of Floyd’s death was horrific, but I’m uneasy with the conviction, simply because I struggle to believe Chauvin meant to kill him.

I’m especially uneasy with the default position of many that it was racially motivated; literally the only person who knows whether there was racist intent is Chauvin, and he’s hardly likely to admit it.

Personally I don't think the racial aspect of it is relevant. I just think if you kneel on someones neck until they die then you've murdered them.

With good behaviour it would seem he will serve 15 years. He will be free when he is 60 years old .

Davebro, any family of a victim can claim a Bereavement award. I have no idea of the average payout though. I guess it depends of the crime.

The judge didn;t stuggle - if he had believed that the murder was deliberate, he would have given Chavin the maximum forty years.

I don't think the default position is that it was racially notivated.

I believe the position is that Chavin's use of excess force was racially motivated, but that he did not intend Floyd to die.

No.

In this case, the city gave the award to fend of a potential civil law suit against the city, which would probably have resulted in a far higher payout if it had gone to court and been heard.

As I pointed out, I believe that if the judge had believed that the murder was intentinal, he would have awarded the maximum sentence of forty years.

The fact that he handed down just over half that demonstrates, in my view, that he did not believe that death was the intended outcome of the action.
