The arrest rates at the Notting Hill Carnival are roughly the same as at the Glastonbury Festival and only one sixth of the rates at the Creamfields Festival (which, in normal times, takes place on the same weekend each year as the Notting Hill Carnival does).

Notting Hill Carnival is one of safest and best organised music events in the country and I'll certainly miss it this year. I've had to miss it for the past few years due to health problems and I was really looking forward to visiting it again this year.

I know I'm knocking my head against a brick wall (a.k.a. TTT's bigotry) but just for the record, here are a few figures anyway:

Any event with 50,000 spectators would probably have an element of crime attached to it somewhere but, in the case of the Notting Hill Carnival, 50,000 isn't the number of spectators but the number of performers. The number of spectators is 2.5 million, which is equivalent to the entire populations of Birmingham, Sheffield, Liverpool and Newcastle added together.

5 murders in an area of London over 32 years on a busy bank holiday weekend is 5 too many.

I am oft accused of being an idealist and I would love a totally crime free country to live in, I doubt I'll live to see that.
