It’s a bit of a disaster politically.
The fully vaccinated Health Secretary goes down with the virus two days before “freedom day”. Casting doubt inevitably on the efficacy of the vaccines (tho hopefully not deterring people from having them), added to the rising alarm about rising deaths and hospital admissions.
I’m a bit torn here: on the one hand I want restrictions eased but it honestly feels now like it would have been better to wait until the end of September which I believe is the target for full vaccination.
Otherwise there’s a danger they’ll have to do what they said they wouldn’t: go into reverse.
It does look like Johnson is scared of his own backbenchers, many of whom apparently will not tolerate any more delay.

It's possible that there were mixed messages, but the fact remains that this morning there was a clear understanding and a statement to the effect that the PM and Chancellor would not self-isolate.

If you look at the Guardian's live feed, at 10.05(am) everyone's still talking about them not isolating (and that was definitely on the BBC website on my computer). The U-turn comes at 10.47.
