Have just heard on the news on the radio that they are trying to make it illegal for a man to wolf whistle at a woman!! Apparently its ‘against a woman’s human rights’. Don’t think I’ve ever heard anything so stupid in my life! I would blush and take it as a compliment. Your thoughts??

Naomi: "The people who come up with notions like this remind me of Dementors … you know, the creatures in the Harry Potter books who suck every shred of happiness out of people. They won’t be content until we’re all as miserable and as sour and as po-faced as they are. " - bang on there's your BA.
Naomi, it doesn't make everyone happy. That's the point... it isn't only how you personally feel.
//This whole strategy is not just about 'wolf whistles' - it's much more in depth than that.//

How can anyone possibly associate a wolf whistle with murder? That is one giant leap... and an illogical one.
My job?

I did have to fork out for the large chest she now has!
So is it still ok for a woman to whistle at a man?
Why illogical? It doesn't lead directly from one to another... but ways of thinking- such as ignoring consent, not giving a toss about someone else feeling uncomfortable or threatened, thinking women require their looks approved by strangers and publicly told so... all strange behaviour.
compulsory ellie!
//not giving a toss about someone else feeling uncomfortable or threatened//

So from that I guess men should never approach a woman (chat up) in case they feel uncomfortable. After all no one actually knows someone is uncomfortable unless they say.

Guess that will reduce the population, are you in the employ of Mr Gates by any chance?
I have read the outline for the strategy again and can see no mention of wolf whistling.

I do however struggle with my eyesight.

If that is what this thread is about, rather than the whole strategy then I apologise for the cluttering up with a link.
Ymb, if you are making women feel uncomfortable by "chatting them up"- I'm impressed you managed to get a wife! :-)))

The difference is, say you are a women, your car breaks down and you end up walking alone, in the dark, some way home. If you heard wolf-whistles and/or comments... would you honestly smile and wave, or in real life, put your head down and walk a bit faster?

I've already said, there is context, times and places- but the point is, they neither know, nor care, whether you feel complimented, offended, or scared out of your wits. It's irrelevant.
That, I think, is where the dislike is.

The parrot whistling made me laugh lol
Mamyalynne, wolf whistling is mentioned in the heading of the article you linked to.
It is and it worked didn't it.

It's not in the Gov.UK link I linked to.
The link mamya provides seems to be a call for evidence. Perhaps an updated link, available below, makes clearer what the Government intends to do:

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1004655/Tackling_Violence_Against_Women_and_Girls_Strategy_-_July_2021.pdf

I haven't read it, but couldn't find any specific reference to whistling. Closest might be "unwanted sexual behaviour/comments".
This gives women the choice.

If they are happy to be ogled, wolf whistled, told to "cheer up", have upskirtt photos taken of them (etc) then they're free to carry on as normal.

For those who don't like this form of attention from strangers, there is now legal recourse.

Just think of this way - if you went round to your mate's house and commented on the attractiveness (or otherwise) of his wife and daughter, he might get a smack in the face.

Why then is it acceptable to do it to strangers?
sp1814, I don't think you can really put up skirting in the same bracket as wolf whistling.
Me neither. Although they are just different degrees of the same idea.
TTT insomuch they are unwanted attention catcalling, wolf whistling, up-skirtingall fall under the same umbrella.

Also - to clarify, it's not only wolf whistling that can be treated as a crime (as opposed to being illegal), but also catcalling.

Catcalling is:

the act of shouting harassing and often sexually suggestive, threatening, or derisive comments at someone publicly

Would you support *this* being made a criminal offence?
The headline is 'wolf whistling', but the meat of the proposed act covers a range of harassments.

It's meant to plug holes in current legislation.

//These are age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation//
