As long as it takes to gain total control - the 5th Reich?
You're like the guy who gets a divorce and spends the rest of his life spying on his ex. Honestly, you can stop obsessing about the EU now; it's time to move on with your own life.

Germany Paid 16.4Bn and Poland received 10.5bn, I suppose there is an historical irony there but seriously, how long will your German in the street tolerate have the peece taken like this?
Whilst it is slightly amusing to see them in a predicament it really isnt in our interest for the EU to collapse. Nobody want a broke neighbour.

Having said that I do wonder how long the German public will put up with this. I suspect things will be ok until the German economy struggles and Germans are out of work, thenfireworks.

You are right YMB, we don't want a complete collapse but it would be good to go back to being a club of cooperating nations rather than the evil empire that is emerging at the moment.

Thechair: "Honestly, you can stop obsessing about the EUSSR now; it's time to move on with your own life. " - we may have escaped but I still have feelings for those left in the grip of a creeping Soviet style dictatorship.
"but it would be good to go back to being a club of cooperating nations "

Nope, have to disagree. We have been there before!

I am still of the belief this is the Germans (Government, not the people) achieving by stealth what they failed to do with two wars.
BA. 12.55. The chair .:-)
//Nope, have to disagree. We have been there before!//

Indeed, youngmaf. And they've largely achieved it.

The "coupe d’état" really came with the introduction of the single currency. The smaller nations who were allowed to participate should never have been allowed to do so and are now trapped. They have a currency that they cannot afford to use and one which they are unable to ditch. It was designed principally so that other nations could buy German goods with a currency that saw them become increasingly indebted. The financial crises in those nations (who will increase in number) will see them continually having to comply with EU (principally German) conditions in order to remain solvent. They threw their hat into the ring hoping to take part and benefit from something which was never going to be favourable for them. Unfortunately their hats have now been well and truly trodden on.

Fortunately that nice Mr Brown scotched any idea of the UK joining in that disaster. Had he not the UK would have been in a much weaker position and may not have been able to achieve a meaningful Brexit.

...they must be rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of Scotland hocking themselves in!
Indeed NJ. One of the few things I will say in Brown's favour is that he stood up to Blair and Mandelson and refused to touch the Euro. I think he was a better chancellor than he was PM.

yep JD, he did that right, St Tony and the prince of darkness would have sunk us straight into the Euro.
if Germany decides to keep its money instead of paying for other countries, they'll be very much wealthier and stronger than now. If this is what you wish for, be careful.
This is not news. Germany has always paid more into the EU than any other country. It always paid more than the UK when we were a member.
The sum paid is based on the countries GDPs. The bigger the economy, the more they pay.
Now that the UK isn’t a contributor, the difference has to be made up by the other 27 countries, so everyone’s going to be paying more.
We all knew this 5 years ago in 2016.

How long will Germany contribute? A large majority of Germans (about 70%) are pro EU. So the answer to your question is probably a very long time.
Maybe with covid & the hit on tourism the GDPs of the southern European countries will decline appreciably and places like France, Germany, the Low Countries & Ireland will have to dig deeper. I'm glad we're out.
Ridiculous.
Germany is obsessed with NOT being too dominant in Europe. It’s partly the point if the EU
So if anything that ought to give the EU-haters hope :-)
// St Tony and the prince of darkness would have sunk us straight into the Euro. //

No they didn’t.
Geoffrey Howe took us into the ERM with disastrous consequences, costing the country £13Billion. Blair had the final say on the €uro, and he elected to stay out.

Gromit: \\// St Tony and the prince of darkness would have sunk us straight into the Euro. //

No they didn’t. \\ - who said they did? I said they would have. Yes the ERM was a coe up but that wasn't remotely close the disaster joining the Euro would have been.
In fairness it was Gordon Brown who insisted the UK stay out of the euro. Tony B wanted to join
If Tony Blair had wanted to join - we would have joined.
We didn’t.
