Cycle lanes are designed by council highways planners - who all drive and do not cycle. Which is why there are thousands of photos online of daft and dangerous paths.

We have cycle lanes here that run alongside the footpaths but cyclists still cycle on the roads. WHY?
You have to allow for the cyclists huge righteousness.
The width of a car.

Because they do not have to use a cycle lane, and are perfectly entitled to use the road.

the problem is that cycle lanes are often poorly implemented, in the case above apparently it's not used because it comes to an end in a strange place and causes the cyclist problems. Often it is better and more convenient to use the road. Most of the "cycle lanes" are just paint slapped on the pavement, I never use those, I hate cycling on the pavement.
If they want to encourage more cycling they should think about flattening some of the hills!

The cycle lane is green, note how it splits the two traffic lanes, that approach the roundabout. The problem is that traffic that wants to turn left has to cross the cycle lane! ....un familiar drivers realise that much later than the locals would and wallop! The sad thing is this junction did used to have the cycle lane closest to the kerb, this is an "improvement"!
The cycle lanes alongside the path down our main road stop and start so the cyclist has to cross the road about three or four times.

can't argue with that gromit!

not really room for another car lane in there, is there? A second lane would leave less than 2ft for the cycle lane, which isn't enough. And short of narrowing the footpaths, which I'm sure would be welcome...

....love no 5!
Question Author
jno, the cycle lane is wider than the car lane! They could have halved the cycle lane and widened the 2 car lanes.
The world is being run by ***-libs. You know this.
even my enormous Jazz will fit comfortably in 9ft 5in and I can still open a door. Maybe they're trying to discourage SUVs, in which case best of British to them.
Question Author
believe it or not jno, trucks drive down the road! They say they hit mirrors when they pass.
yeah, I can see one. I don't know why they don't divert trucks if that's the aim - and it might be, it looks residential.

it's the main road into Wimborne!
