… by a temporary visa system for foreign drivers?

I thought a certain Swift character known for his travels might have beaten me to this one ;-)
At least this way you get a link

The government knows this, and knows that they will appear to be going back on Brexit if they turn round now and let foreign workers back in.

“7 OP //" What worries me though is how dependent we seem to be on road haulage.”
Well if you think about it we’re dependent on lots of things. You have to get things from A to B somehow, be it food, fuel, electricity, gas, data etc etc. Not so long ago it was the drivers who were on strike or blockading fuel depots.
We’ve had the fire that damaged the underwater cable recently,
Then we realise how potentially fragile our lifestyles are.

// Without lorry drivers, Western civilization would collapse. They make the 'just-in-time' 'supply chain' work.//

dry wit is completely unwanted on AB and extirpated at every opportunity
unhappy horses - well if the alternative were dog meat I think they would choose plodding on a canal side. It you are a horse dragging a boat frooda water isnt THAT arduous - men did it wiv dair feet in tunnels remember

Of course 7OP never said the above, i.e. " What worries me though is how dependent we seem to be on road haulage." was said by a worried TTT @ 11:37 Fri 24th Sep 2021....
"common sense" Link @ 22:39 Fri 24th Sep 2021 makes zero mention of actually paying the HGV drivers what they are worth ( MUCH more £££s than currently paid, ) just re-import the cheaper Euro HGV-ers again... now then, can't have these UK citizen driver proles getting too much dosh, eh?
exposing the spurious and specious "supply and demand.... market forces...the market price-finding mechanism" invisible hand pablum
( just like that Magic Money Tree that materialized during the covid-19 crony-slush-fund feeding frenzy)
Still, gotta keep the crucial 'bread' half of the crowd control 'bread and circuses' going, and the 'circus' half was in fact over functioning, but the bewildered herd had not been instructed via MSM to notice.
They ( the bewildered herd) seem to have no idea just what is coming this winter... neigh-Ho-ho-ho!

I agree with YMB (I may have to lie down in a cool room for a while).
a capitalist system means the most important people get the highest pay; if lack of drivers brings the system to a halt, then the system isn't working. The government is keen to get driverless trains on the London underground for the same reason. Maybe Boris should be funding the development of driverless lorries?
