Over 40,000 daily cases in latest report.

Out and about today (walking, bus, train and ferry) I noticed quite a lot of face masks amongst the elderly, but the young mainly ignoring the advice. There are exceptions obviously.

Trumpeting the number of infections is pointless scaremongering. It will spread - masks or not - but we need to be realistic and acknowledge that, statistically, it kills very few.
case fatality ratio is around 0.3%
200 deaths a day isn‘t very few.
It was very few in May when deaths were in single figures.

The Covid wards are currently full of people who have been double jabbed.
The science behind mask wearing preventing infections is clear. Anti maskers are as bad as anti Vaxxers.

Gromit, //Three quarters of those hospitalised had not had a Covid jab, with a "higher proportion" of younger people now being affected,//

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58494842
gromit: "Quarter of a million new cases in a week. My area is around 500. But people are ignoring it. No mask wearing, packed pubs, public transport rammed. " - I can't decide if you really are as stupid as you are coming across or whether this is just your normal Anti British spin. The number of cases is no longer of any relevance. The vaccine does not give immunity, it give resilience. Hence there are very few deaths and hospitalisations. Geddit?
GROMIT, when was the last time there had been 200 deaths in a day within twenty-eight days of a positive COVID test?
fromit: "The Covid wards are currently full of people who have been double jabbed. " - did you do maths at school? 90% of the adult population are double jabbed! It stands to reason that 90% of the cases are from that group. The vaccine never claimed to be 100% effective. Still carry on with your anti British BS if that's what floats your boat.
I had a Covid scare a fortnight ago.
I helped someone move house a fortnight ago. There were 4 of us who had all been double jabbed. Two shortly after got Covid. One of those had also previously been hospitalised by Covid.
So it is real, active in the community, and I am still doing my best to avoid getting it. I even didn’t go into a pub on Saturday because it was too full.
I find the many questions concerning Covid are imponderable.

Yes, Covid still is around.
Yes, the NHS need to return attention to huge waiting lists.

Which is worse - a death from Covid or cancer (for e.g.)?

God only knows.
UK is one of the countries with the highest reported Covid cases in Europe.,,,, Boris was shouting the odds about being world leaders with vaccinations a few months ago What happened ?
Gromit - God knows what you are going to do when winter flu kicks in, stay at home all winter? They are predicting 60000 deaths this year from flu. What do you suggest we do about that? There isn't anything, we will just have to accept it.
Fully Vaccinated People Account For Only 1% Of Covid Deaths.

https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/coronavirus-fully-vaccinated-people-account-for-only-1-of-covid-deaths-uk-data-2539852

'imagine everyone is now fully vaccinated with COVID vaccines—which are excellent but can't save all lives. Some people who get infected with COVID will still die. All of these people will be fully vaccinated—100%. That doesn't mean vaccines aren't effective at reducing death.'

ZM, giood effort but it's pointless trying to get gromit to see sense, he is blinded by his hatred of the UK and bitterness that his communist buddies are not running the country.
I ws saying on here before Christmas that Covid would become another flu - something that society lives with.

It will kill a relatively small number, it is nasty, but it is here, and we have to live with it.

On the other hand, it's not the Black Death, and the constant advice to the public on a daily basis of how many people are infected or dead is utterly pointless.

What exactly are we supposed to do with that information?

Leaving aside that the fact of the wilful distortion of the statistics - people dying who have been infected does not mean they died of Covid, so the numbers are meaningless.

If someone has termnal cancer, and a week to live, and contracts Covid, it's reasonable to assume that their death is no down to Covid alone, although inclusion in the stats will infer that.

It's time to stop making it a miserable feature of daily life, we have to live with it, and that's all we can do.
//UK is one of the countries with the highest reported Covid cases in Europe.,,,, //

I haven't checked that and Gulliver has, as usual, offered no evidence to support it. I do, however, suspect that if it is true 'reported' is the operative word.
"UK is one of the countries with the highest reported Covid cases in Europe"

We have had 8,046,390 cases compared to Germany's 4,306,757 but our testing rate per million is 4,542,769 compared to Germany's 871,924, meaning we are testing a much greater proportion of the population and bound to discover more positive cases.
When you were "out and about" where exactly were you? The latest government guidance says this:

"We expect and recommend that members of the public continue to wear face coverings in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet. For example, on public transport."

Were you in any such places? I have seen people wearing them in the street, in the park and even when driving in a car alone. The guidance also says this:

//You should use your judgement in deciding where you should wear one.//

So what makes your judgement on these people (who have made their own decisions, as advised by the government, and of whom you obviously disapprove) any better than theirs?

//Quarter of a million new cases in a week. My area is around 500. But people are ignoring it.//

And your point is what, exactly? The 7-day average of daily new infections has been over 30,000 since 21st September. In that period, the number of new hospital admissions has reduced from around 800 a day to around 650. The number of people actually in hospital has declined from 7,800 to 6,800. The seven day average of daily deaths (which are by no means a proper measure of how many people have died as a result of catching the virus, but it's all we've got) has reduced from 144 to 108. So why does it matter how many people are said to have contracted the virus? Each of the three top causes of death in the UK is recording more than four times as many deaths as Covid.

//No mask wearing, packed pubs, public transport rammed.//

The "science" behind the efficacy of wearing non-medical grade face coverings by untrained and undisciplined people is nowhere near as cut-and-dried as you suggest, However, we've been there, done that. It is now a matter of personal choice. I've been to London three times in the last couple of weeks. Buses, trains and tubes are probably carrying less than half their normal number of passengers. The incidence of mask wearing has declined considerably in the last couple of months and I would now put it at less than 50% in most places.

//So it is real, active in the community, and I am still doing my best to avoid getting it...//

That's your decision and others must respect that. Quite how long you will continue with those measures is also your decision. As far as I am concerned the pandemic in the UK is over and the disease is now endemic (as most new respiratory viruses eventually become). With 40,000 new cases reported daily there must be many times that number tested and I don't really understand why all these people are being tested every day. The only people who need a test are those suffering from symptoms and then only to establish what they are suffering from. Time has come to move on.
Difficult to add anything to that NJ, you have pretty much said what I came on to say.
