There was some land at the back of where I live which has now thankfully been built on, but we used to get travellers there and not only did they steal from our houses (they even took a dog, but the owner marched right onto the site and got him back) but when they left the amount of rubbish was horrendous and they even left behind neglected dogs - it was a damn nightmare ! I have no sympathy.

Personally I'd give councils powers to confiscate their posh jam jars to pay for the damage and them move them on instantly. It would kill the problem overnight. But hey ho too many handwringers prevent us dealing with the problem.

To answer the question - No.

To relay a personal experience...

Overnight about 15 years ago, a dozen or so caravans arrived at the rugby club I'm a member of, and it took about a fortnight to get rid of them.

In the fortnight they were there, the club had to close (so loss of income), the local crime rate increased, the pubs in the vicinity had to close due to the trouble they caused, local shops suffered thefts and intimidation...and these are just the things I knew about.

When they eventually left, the mess they left behind was simply staggering, including piles of dirty nappies; it took volunteers ages to clear up the mess, and if memory serves it took about half a dozen skips. It took months for the churned-up pitches to get back to normal.

Owners of open spaces, including local authorities, should do all in their power to hinder travellers from setting-up camp.

Having experienced the problems they caused one Christmas in Skegness, I would be in favour of using every means available (legal) to stop them parking on open spaces. They have no respect for the rest of the community, and they don't seem to be able to use the toilets in their caravans so just use any space available. It was a nightmare cleaning up after them and that was over 20 years ago, so nothing is being done about them.

I remember when they used to come to the site I mentioned earlier, they all pulled up in their huge 4 x 4's pulling modern caravans with no tax discs on the vehicles (this was in the days of tax discs) and us residents used to gather to try and stop them and the police always turned up. I remember one resident pointing out to the police the lack of tax discs and guess what - they did NOTHING. All they did was push back an elderly man who lived in the end house of my street, back then, when he went towards the travellers having a go at them. He did this because his was always the first house they attempted to burgle ! I was so angry with the pc for pushing an old man back that I complained bitterly to her, but again, NOTHING ! No wonder people dislike travellers, one law for them and another for the rest of us ...
