This has always been the fear: that antibiotics will cease their effectiveness either through inappropriate use or because bacteria adapt.
As for inappropriate prescription, well the general public don’t prescribe, So the message needs to be hammered home to those doing the prescribing

This isn't news, we've been told this long time ago. I can't even remember the last time my GP agreed to give me antibiotics. I've been fobbed off with 'it's viral' for at least 20 years.

And as Ich quite rightly points out its the Doctors any concerns should be addressed to.

I would suggest that the majority of clinics are similar to mine, where many patients demand antibiotics and for a quiet life they're given them. I have friends who do this and then complain afterwards that they didn't work in spite of having been told they wouldn't when receiving them.

Then again, there are those of us who haven't taken any drugs for many years. In my case none since I had a hip replacement 10 years ago. And I can't remember when I took any before that. I don't need them you see!

Some of the worst offenders are the factory farms that feed antibiotics to animals to ward off infections in them. These atibiotics are then injested in our diets if we are not cooking or handling raw meat safely. The worst offenders are the Danish factory farms. We must be mad to let them send us the poison.

I recently developed a chest infection whilst already on Penicillin for tonsillitis. A further course of Doxycycline failed to clear it and eventually I was given Clarithromycin and Prednisone.

It's worrying, it really is.
